Why does an ad agency need a computer?
Just don't forget who your working for
Client records?
>>215062707To impress their clients with.
>>215062819What does that even mean? It’s not like there’s a GUI and folders for easy access. A manila folder works best

>>215062877Well it can keep the info that you print out and put in the folders
It's just a series of tubes is you think about it
>>215063665We’re talking about the computer, not the girl anon.
>>215062707if i remember correctly it was for processing data when they started to invest heavily in TV ads.(ratings, demos, age, etc) it was a natural step and also to impress clients
In 1960s ad agencies did 70-80% of their revenue from media space sales. Advertising was a window dressing thrown on top.In 1967 US had around 1700-1800 daily newspapers, 3400 AM radio channels and +5000 magazines. Just compiling their spot prices, purchase packages, customer demographics, bulk purchases, ad tracking, conversion rates etc. would require spreadsheets that need computerization. So for example a computer operator could check how many US Newspapers had ran adds for Chevy Vega in the last quarter when the boys from Detroit called and wanted an update to sell remainining pre-facelift models before turn of 1973 or something.
>>215064060In mid 20th century industrial economy you generally had a mismatch of factories that produce predictable numbers of commodities, have long wind up in production lines and customer preferences evolve quickly due to demographic, cultural, spatial and technological shifts. Add in rampart inflation in 1970s and you're in a situation where companies generally can't sell everything they produce predictably with simple pricing and thus have to resort to marketing to produce somewhat predictable turnovers required for optimizing the investment cycle so that dividends can be paid.If we are bit simplistic marketing of these mostly undifferentiated consumer goods with low brand value was seen as being directly tied to marketing operations. Need to sell more Champion sweatshirts this quarter? Sell them at a discount and buy add space everywhere. Too much demand for your TV set? Increase price, spend the premiums in building value (R&D, branding, design) or invest in additional production by building new lines/buying out competion - optimally all three - and try to corner market when new factories allow you to flood markets. Marketing is a short term crutch here to drive sales, when nowadays sales tend to be the preferred method in mostly stagnant consumer good product markets.

>>215064231>>215064060I still don’t know what data they were entering in the computer. Everything, all the buying and selling, was being done by a few guys.
>>215064247you asked and I told you>>215064428Probably a lot of paper files being modernized to data formats, all of accounting, starting to create demographic databases, modernizing contracts etc. At least in the first office they had a finance office never really shown.
>>215065545>starting to create demographic databases, modernizing contractsdon’t forget the synergy!
>>215065545didn't ask, redditor
>>215065584Whats the issue here? A 60s office produced a fuckton of paper - 2-3 memos a day per secretary. That created a log of stuff just to digitalize.
>>215062707To make everyone gay.
>>215066455There’s no GUI. I can’t wrap my brain around that. I doubt they were digitizing memos until the 90s
>>215064231Do you really think anyone was putting this much thought into anything in a time where domestic violence was shrugged off and black people weren’t allowed to ride on certain parts of the bus?
>>215067875>do you think people accomplished more work without blacks and women to fuck everything up maybe
