Were we supposed to feel bad for this guy?
>>215063179Ironically the real life Chris Kyle would've absolutely hated his depiction in American Sniper. In the actual book, Chris goes on and on about how much he enjoyed killing and how little respect he had for those who claimed to be traumatized by it after the fact. He was very against ever being characterized as someone with PTSD and he never once professed any reservations about the grisly shit he did over there. He even bragged about killing Americans back home during Katrina and how much fun that was for him. Solid film but definitely a misrepresentation of the real life person.
>>215063251Every thread lol.

>>215063264It's kind of the one glaring flaw of the film to point to but, at the same time, a book accurate depiction of the character would've been incredibly controversial and the film would've been painted as "anti-veteran" even if it was more accurate for it.
>>215063251He was also lied about beating Jesse Ventura, if I remember correctly. Jesse said he felt deeply betrayed because he always thought of marines as a kind of brotherhood.
>>215063179I'm not sure what we were "supposed" to feel. magachuds got pumped by it and wanted to go enlist. sois smirked and told them they missed the point and lacked media literacy. But I don't think the movie really took a position either way.
>>215063328It's hard to say for sure one way or the otherhttps://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2014/07/16/ex-seal-says-he-saw-ventura-punched/
>>215063251Sounds based. Some men were born to kill and to fight for their society's interests and he was one of them. The guys who whine about fulfilling their nature while still doing it are worse.
>>215063399He definitely comes across as a more multidimensional character in the book despite clearly also being a full-blown sociopath for that very reason. He recognizes what he is and doesn't condemn himself for it because he understands its value in a world where men like him are necessary. That kind of nuance would be lost on American audiences though so instead they made him out to be a PTSD-ridden guy who doesn't enjoy violence but feels compelled to do it anyway out of service (which is more palatable but a lot less interesting).
>>215063328It isn't just that he was adjudicated to have lied about (he has never once been in the same state as Jesse Ventura), it's virtually everything. Half the things he claimed he did, he simply did not do, like murdering civilians during Hurricane Katrina (he never did that; it never happened), and the things he did do, like murdering unarmed scavengers in Iraq, he mischaracterized as shooting enemy combatants, although he was probably dumb enough to think his victims were part of some insurgent conspiracy. He just shot anyone he saw. There was also never any countersniper or sniper of any kind named Juba, and he never had a sniper duel. I'm also willing to bet the marines didn't need his guidance on how to breach doors or anything else. Perhaps the only accurate accounts of the film were the names of the primary characters.Sometimes the mentally ill are called "touched by the angels", and I can't help but wonder if it was God voicing Gabriel through the schizophrenic who slaughtered him. America, and especially its military, produces a large amount of fucking human garbage, but even considering that he was exceptionally vile.
