I recently rewatched 3 first seasons of Spongebob and I was amazed by the quality of writing and jokes, but unironically.
First 2 seasons of Spongbob legitimately MOG any Rick and Morty or Smiling Friends. In fact, only after rewatching it I realized the magnitude of the influence it had on modern comedy cartoons. Not only cartoons, I would say half of the modern internet humor is based around Spongebob-style gags. Watching these first seasons after consuming modern slop is like dining in a 5-star restaurant after eating McDonalds - the difference is just too big.

Why did we settle for such low-effort and low-quality media when things used to be so good?

sure, it was a very influential show, but I don't think SpongeBob invented that kind of humor from scratch. I see it as an evolution of the style of '90s Cartoon Network's shows

One of the things I noticed the most is the saturation. In Spongebob, something happens every few minutes. Episodes have a plot, but it is always accompanied with diverse visual gags or one-liners.

In Smiling Friends or Rick and Morty 90% of an episode is one very boring set up and the other 10% is a punchline. Sometimes it is diluted with writer's personal commentary on something nobody cares about and that's it. Spongebob is like a pure self-sufficient comedy minigun that fires a bullet every few milliseconds.

It was lighting in a bottle man. Even my boomer dad who never watches /tv/ was adamant at the time it was the golden age of cartoons. History proved him right.

This has been every adult cartoon for a decade now. Family guy somehow is the only one keeping some semblance of “gags” going.

the Simpsons too, even if 99% of the jokes and gags suck now

I could see that

Well yeah a good show obviously mogs two terrible shows

Spongebob is the most overrated show in existence. Nearly all of its episodes are generic plots with mediocre dialogue, and the humor comes entirely from memes based on close-ups of characters faces or weird moments like in the OP pic.

The humor is all Squidward. It’s pretty much the Squidward show with three other characters.
