This is the first fucking episode and it's full of lies already. Why would they make him retarded? Wouldn't it be scarier to portray him as what he actually was? A schizophrenic man who could portray himself like a normal introverted guy to the general public, yet he was one of the most depraved people in history.
But no, they had to make him retarded in order for you to feel sorry about him. That's why they show the mother as a bitch, because they want you to feel like Ed wasn't really the bad guy, he was just a victim of his mother.
