Deep down John Fences does love his son but teaching him to live without receiving that validation or depending on it is part of making him strong and the dad believes that is necessary to making him happy.
Parents liking their children is necessary for the kids developing healthy self-confidence and opinions on their self-image. Not enough liking and the kids feel like they're unintersting little faggots. Too much and they get spoiled and think they are God's gift to the world. Like with many things, it's all in moderation.That being said you should always love your kids a ton and unconditionally. In the summers I wandered the woods because nobody was home. I do not particularly think I'm any stronger or weaker than anyone else, but I did develop a crippling need for solitude, silence, and wearing jeans and long sleeves despite 100+ degree heat. I would be curious to see the differences in personality between those of "us" who had more than OTA television and lived in more urban environments vs those who grew up with maybe three channels and lived in the middle of bumfuck.
