The books are very TV, which is why they were so easily adaptable for TV, even if those two jews in charge of the whole thing still managed to fuck it up.But in terms of the modern fantasy "canon" they're average. George probably always resented the series' popularity to some extent, but a few years into the show that got turned up to 11.
If it was just dislike or resentment he would still finish it for the money and attention. He doesn't know how to finish it and he's scared of the reaction.
