>That random period in the 2000s when we got several absolutely kino Wuxia films, and then Hollywood moved on and forgot all about the genreWhat the fuck was that about?
>>215078344Choreography turned out to be hard
dubs > subs
>>215078386It was part of the charm for sure.
>>215078344didnt make enough of a profit obviously
>>215078344Too much effort needed to make them
>>215078344I thought Memoirs of a Geisha was one of those and ended up horribly disappointed.
>>215078344cgi got better and easier than choreography. also there was a gay floatiness that was exceedingly unnatural, and you can only tolerate so much of that.
>>215078344Too much romantic drama, not enough martial arts. Not surprising the same director later made Brokeback Mountain. Iron Monkey, now THAT was kino
>>215079895Floatiness is the point, musicals break into songs and Julia has wire work.
>>215079026lol
>>215078344This was really boring
Hollywood used to make 'pirate movies' as a matter of course, and yet we've only had ONE pirate move in the past 25 years.
>>215078344Hongkong came back to China, all the talents started to suck mainlander dongs and oh boy oh boy their taste is shit So after the old dogs retired nobody left competent enough to make martial art kino Look at the current state of chinese cinema lmao
>>215080819i dont think you understand. its not that they're flying, its not the wirework, its the floatiness. the physics just feel OFF. i dont care if they're flying, running on walls/trees, its just that the motion feels bogged down. its like in a dream when you cant move fast enough but you know you should be going faster. like, mario64 walljumping is quick and snappy. watching spiderman or hulk do the same kind of wall jumping is quick and snappy, visceral. the wuxia shit is slow, floaty, and just stupidly unnatural. the acceleration is all wrong and theres no weight to it. like, they'll snap to pose, but the flight they take is just so fucking slow in comparison. they literally move faster and more realistically with feet on the ground. the grounded choreography is more satisfying. and like i said, it can be an interesting spectacle for something new and different, but you can only tolerate so much of it before getting fed up and wanting something better.
>>215081665It was unique and the first time I saw it as a kid so I never tired of it. Never seen another movie try it. The jet li movie black mask was way more kinetic and action focused.
>>215081722cthd was the first time i saw something like that too. before that, the closest things were bruce lee or jackie chan movies. but op mentioned that there were several of them, and then they got dropped, and asked why. kids dont run hollywood. other people got tired of the gimmick, and were more impressed by better looking cgi.
>>215081813Operation condor and no more mr nice guy are vastly different from the one and kiss of the dragon.
>>215078344I was such a fucking weeb (cheeb?) for wuxia films when I was a kid I thought I grew out of it but maybe that coincided with its collapse in popularity. Never thought of it that waysometimes I wish I had stuck with it and learned chinese

>>215080783This man knows kino
