The government and the police are shown as fascists but the revolutionaries are seen as violent idiots. Everyone is a bit incompetent and I'd say no one is idealized. The only character who is trhough and through competent and kind is Benicio del Toro's character and even then the joke is how chill he's about everything. The main foundation of the film seems to be family rather than politics, even though clearly politics are very relevant. I'm not a leftist and I really enjoyed it.

>>215078461It's a pretty straightforward action thriller with a provocative backdrop and western pastiches. Really good performance by Penn and Del toro, surprisingly funny Leo performance. Daughter was good and cute too. The movie did nothing for me emotionally and the pacing was weird but it's a step above most action movies given the direction and cinematography. Between this and Caught Stealing we've gotten two pretty normal movies by "auteur" directors which is interesting. Maybe studios are finally realizing it's worth hiring actual talent to make even the run of the mill films and we can go back to good movies again although I don't think either performed well.

Saw it tonight and was disappointed.Inherent Vice did poorly because it was just 50% of the book directly put on screen to fit into movie length and the audience got lost. He went so far in the opposite direction with this that he completely lost the soul of the novel. Benicio del Toro's sensei character was honestly the only fun part. Ok so this part of the movie confuses me a little: the reformation and counter-reformation referenced in some character names.Tony Goldwyn's character is named Virgil Throckmorton, after the Throckmorton plot to kill Elizabeth I and reinstall a Catholic monarch on the throne of England. "Virgil" places this firmly in the American neoclassical tradition, emphasizing that this is about recapturing England for 'Rome', not strictly a Catholic-Protestant question. It's clear enough what this means; the Christmas Adventurers are conspirators to recapture America for a 'dispossessed' worldly empire. Anyone familiar with certain strains of twitter right-communist politics posting will grasp immediately that this is the Rome that is also British finance, Israel, the Catholic Church, the antichrist, etc. This is the Rome that is conquering or has conquered America and subdued it.But on the other hand, Benicio Del Toro's character is Sergio St. Carlos, as in Saint Charles Borromeo, the Catholic prelate and Cardinal associated with the counter-reformation who had a hand in the Council of Trent. (It must be admitted that we are also meant to think of the San Carlos, a Spanish boat that was first to enter San Francisco Bay and for which the city of San Carlos is named.) From a technical perspective, it’s really impressive. The cinematography is good and the setpieces are immaculate, so many of the shots are just cool to look at. It’s a shame the story sucks so much, Leo and his daughter don’t really do anything and just get carted around by side characters for two and a half hours while the cartoonishly evil old white guys and their copy-pasted bearded soldiers kinda just trail behind. It’s hard to find any of the far-left domestic terrorist revolutionaries endearing, and the main villain is shown to be a complete pussywipe from the very beginning, so he never comes off as threatening. Characterization aside, every setup has a really obvious payoff or twist, so you end up knowing most of the major plot points before they’re revealed.
