Why he went with the original Broadway cast I will never understand. They were all in their late 30s by then. Also the movie really highlights what insufferable pricks every character is in a way you don't really catch watching a stage musical.

Seasons of Love is a 10/10 song. I feel like that song alone carried Rent. The rest of the story and music was allowed to be shitty 'cause Seasons of Love made up for it.

This highlights the issue with the adaptation from stage to screen: Maureen's stage show was supposed to be terrible, it was a jibe at awful, pretentious one-woman shows and the theater crowd understood it was a satire. But in the movie, it's framed and performed as if it's this deep piece of political theater instead of shitty bad performance art.
