Even if you speak the word out loud for them an ask them to repeat it.By the way this isn't just an "American" thing. The reverse is also true. Japanese people have a lot of trouble reproducing English words they're unfamiliar with in their proper pronunciations, even if you say them out loud for them. If you have any Japanese friends, ask them to pronounce Worchestershire Sauce. It's hilarious. I had one girl friend who'd always trip up laughing on the line "mass hysteria" from Ghostbusters. "MAS-IS-IS-SU-STE-". The fun never ends

It's a bit closer to a "D" even but the tongue shape is slightly different from the english standards. Also the japanese G can often take on a nasal dipthong that isn't common in english. It's not quite "-NG" but involves a slight compression of the soft palate.
