When you have shows like Star Trek Voyager, or Sliders, shows with an overarching plot line that gets resolved in the Finale...they often sprinkle episodes that almost resolve the plot but something goes wrong.

Do writers sprinkle these episodes around the show in case the show gets canceled, they can just retool the ending and make the attempt to get home in that episode successful?
