I kind of like the explanation we got in-film. Their options were>Train professional astronauts to understand the bare minimum of the drill machinery operation, with no professional expertise (no clue what to do with jams, failures, surface density changes, etc.)or>Train professional drillers to understand the bare minimum of going into space (suits, gravity), while the real astronauts do the real astronaut things to get them there, then the drillers do the drill operation.I'm sure someone can rip the premise to shreds, but it sounded reasonable in the moment, and I don't hate it in hindsight.

>>215101561that's what pisses me off about that quote. none of the rigpigs flew the fuckin spaceships, they were simply trained to drill in space wearing spacesuits. it's a bit of a plotpoint that ben affleck and the survivors of the crashed shuttle have to figure out how to drive the rover so they can make it to the drill site, because the two actual astronauts on board die in the crash and peter stormare is a crazy russian who's never seen the rover before. i'd also like to point out that armageddon has the exact same plot as sunshine, but sunshine is lauded as a sci fi masterpiece while armageddon gets nothing but mockery.
