She was a teenager. She was smart but put her entire identity into being an intellectual. Just like Jane did as an artist or Trent a musician or Quinn a popular girl or the mom a lawyer or the teachers as teachers. The show is a study of types aimed at teenagers. The protagonist was audience surrogate of 90s teenager with plenty of other shit thrown in to make it entertaining. Idk, she wasn't meant to be some ideal hero, she's a teenage girl who goes to high school in an upper-middle class suburb in America in the 90s. Seems pretty spot-on to me, as a guy that was Daria's exact age throughout the show. This show really captures suburban teenage American life in the 90s.

It's too bad we never saw how Daria turned out after college. I think that, after finding out it's really difficult to get a job as a writer, or to make it on your own as a writer, she would find a job that's a good fit for her mindset, such as police officer.
