The whole point of the marines is to show their arrogance is what gets them killed. Ferro and Spunkmeyer didn't believe Ripley's story, so they landed the dropship (like they were supposed to), maybe Spunkmeyer was refuelling the ship, maybe he was just stepping outside to take a piss, either way neither of them expected a hostile presence, let alone deadly aliens. As far as they were concerned the situation was most likely some dumb colonists broke their communication equipment or something just as trivial.

I'll admit, I did forget about the fight. But remember the marines still go in overly confident because as far as they're concerned nothing can beat them. Spunkmeyer also doesn't seem particularly impressed by the facehugger, if anything he seems bored.
>the marines were inhumanly retarded because Cameron needed them to be
Cameron wrote them to be arrogant, they're not inhumanly retarded, and if you think they are, then you have spent a lot of time around people working in trades or manual labour. People do really stupid shit even when they KNOW it's dangerous. I have seen people brace angle grinders with the stomachs while cutting metal, I have seen crews take the guards of concrete saws because they "get in the way" shit that will rip you open faster than you can blink. We know the marines are being fucking stupid and should have just nuked the site from orbit the second they saw the colony, but that's because we have seen the Alien before, we know exactly what they're up against. The same way we know it's fucking stupid for the jock to "go check it out" in slasher films.

Films don't work anymore. There's not enough cinema-going audience, the ones that are there just endlessly whine "dis jus da same thing! xeno is dead it has to be diffrunt! not scurry!" blah blah. It has to default to a stupid haunted house slasher movie to get any box office. We all thought it'd work as a TV show since they would finally be able to expand the universe showing the lore that's been there for decades. And look how poorly that turned out. At least they finally acknowledged that there's more than just weyland yutani and it's not controlling the entire galaxy.

The marines did thoroughly scout the entire colony area with motion trackers and found nothing hostile. Using the colony computers, they determined that all colonist's trackers were many kilometers away at the atmosphere processing plant. Hudson says it has a 20km range and it takes him a long time to find them. That's why Ferro and Spunkmeyer felt safe to have the ramp down. The Squad had to drive all the way over there to find the enemy. And they wanted the dropship to pick them up since it would take a while to walk back. The movie skips over how long it takes for them to walk back. But they spend a while looking over the blueprints and see that a really long service tunnel is how the xenomorphs are going back and forth from the plant to the colony.

There's really no need. All colonists are already dead. The aliens are essentially in hibernation at that point (the worst part of the lore here). No reason they can't just be observed from afar since the aliens literally have no way to cause any problems. At that point, they could take there time bringing more equipment from Earth. Send in drones and androids to collect specimens and conduct experiments with the aliens. Burke was 100% right that it was dumb to arbitrarily exterminate them.
>>
>>215135634
Nah, the Xenomorph represents an existential threat and needs to be wiped out. The only reason to do any further study on LV-426 would be to study the derelict to determine a possible origin point and go there to wipe that out as well.

IIRC the original film is set in 2122. This isn't confirmed in-film (I don't think) but it's probably established in the novelization/screenplay or other secondary stuff. Then the events of Aliens occur 57 years later, and the fan consensus seems to be that it takes place in 2179 specifically (maybe that's mentioned in the screenplay, maybe not). So late 22nd century.

>>215133873

Yes and no, and there's tension between these two attitudes among the characters. The two contradicting attitudes are alternated to make the drama work. During the initial wake-up sequence, the dominant idea is to show that they're all cocky and some of them don't take her too seriously. But Ripley does assert herself and their CO does tell them to read her file. She gets their attention, and during their initial exploration, everything they see lines up with what she's been telling them. When they get into the building they do take the op seriously because it's obvious that the shit has gone down.

At the critical moment, when they move into the hive, Gorman blinks and gets locked-in, rather than calling everyone back to reset. That's the critical fuck-up, and it's written so that it's perfectly obvious to the audience so they can say to themselves "what the hell are you doing". Then the major problems begin. Gorman even had a smug look when they found the PDTs: "Heh, we found 'em, this'll be easy." He must have thought that they were all "hiding out" over there, or something.

But yes, overall the "strict" culture shown alternates with obvious fuck-ups like leaving the hatch open. Ripley even creates her own problem when she mashes elevator buttons, allowing the queen to follow them in a second elevator (she can hardly be faulted for this panic-error, given the situation, but still).
>>
>>215135931
Because HE is overwhelmed by the situation in front of him and the last thing he is thinking about is the dropship miles away from them.
>>
>>215135800

He's conveniently knocked out during his power struggle with Ripley inside the APC (how the fuck did pencilneck Burke force him into the side compartment? I guess you could say that corporate/controlling interests take over around this moment), because the story requires him to be out of commission for a bit so that Ripley/Hicks can take over, thus preventing this rational communication. If he had understood himself to be in a battlespace like everyone else, with lots of shit inside the APC that might get knocked down and knock him in the head, then he might have worn a helmet, but he doesn't do that. Newt gets the idea in the middle when she cutely puts on a helmet herself. It might have actually protected her when it counts.

It doesn't represent any more threat than a tiger that's smart enough to solve puzzles and open doors. It literally can't get off LV-426 and certainly can't pilot spacecraft. And as stated, they can observe it for decades with no problem or danger. The more they watch and learn about the alien, the less dangerous it is. It's only ever a problem because people didn't know of its abilities and lifecycle.

>>
>>215136611
>He has all the information he needs and he still fucked up.
No he doesn't. He doesn't know if the threat is still active. He doesn't know what exactly the threat is. And none of them know the aliens are smart enough to scout out the dropship miles away and attack it.
>>215136621
>Neglecting to inform them lead to Spunkmeyer disregarding his discovery of a big handful of xeno jizz on the ramp.

>>
>>215136673
>What do you expect him to do when he discovers the jizz?
Have his guard up? Maybe draw his sidearm and warn Ferro that the dropship might be compromised?
>>
>>215136653
Yeah, but like leave one dude, just in case.
And still, there are at least two drop ships, and only one pilot and co-pilot. Bishop was the only other one who could fly it.
And again, it doesn't really matter, because the movie needs to happen.
And even if they thought it was a bull shit job, you would still need someone up on the ship, just in case literally anything happened.
>>
>>215136732
You're right that it's crap Cameron did to make the story work. But I still kinda liked it since it adds to the scifi feel. In this future, space travel and equipment is so mundane that they don't need backups upon backups. The ship can run itself and they have a remote control box that can fly another shuttle down to them in half an hour if they need it. The series won't ever do anything interesting with that so oh well.
>>
>>215136567
That said, in a series of strange and perhaps meaningless yet somehow directly relevant coincidence, Ridley directed a film about the true story of American soldiers who wore only half their body armor and carried no night vision or water on a special mission.

Ferro should have been monitoring the platoon net the whole time to prepare for an evac. She would have heard the entire fight and been ready to evac the platoon, if not orbiting the evac site itself in anticipation of the order.
>>
>>215136309
The challenger explosions(happened year the movie released) and the collapse of the soviets really fucked space exploration because budgets got pulled for satellites and internet instead.
That being said, Alien space travel is absolute ass. Extended cryo-sleep moving at sub-light speeds is miserable and shitty but it mostly exists to make sure it's clear the various parties are extremely isolated, like soldiers in 'nam

The thread is exploring the interesting idea of exactly who was in contact with who, and when. Various posts have suggested that the ground team failed to inform the pilot team of the threat in time. I would like to think that Ferro has an open channel at all times, but the very fact that Hicks asks whether she copies, and that she seems fairly nonchalant, would suggest that she's not fully aware of what's just happened, which is stupid but again necessary for story reasons. A whole bank of monitors and bio-readouts showing hyper-concern for each individual and then the pilot team is like eh, whatever. But it's fiction, and it works as a fictional story.

Also things are moving very quickly, and the mission time marker on the above APC monitors is very helpful. They're only a few hours in, whatever it is, at the time of the hive. The monitors themselves anticipate bodycams on cops, the show COPS itself, etc, and give a little of the "found footage" horror genre, film-within-a-film, but porting the basic idea directly from the original (signal weakens as the away team approaches the dangerous structure).

I compare all this to the Apollo program. As a boomer, Cameron had it in mind as a model for how spaceflight and missions in general might work. Other anons have commented that you obviously want to have at least one guy up in orbit, which is what Apollo did (although that guy couldn't do anything to rescue the ground crew if anything went wrong on the surface). Also, the occasional comms back and forth between pilot group and the ground crew are slightly suggestive of same. In the last Avatar movie, the human landers have "LM" written on them, i.e. the Lunar Module abbreviation.

The pilot team wouldn't necessarily be aware of that unless Gorman was telling them, having said that I'd also be surprised if the aircrew weren't also on the same comms as the ground team given how they deployed. At the very least they'd be monitoring it, even if they weren't going to talk on it.

I like how the gun turret on the ass end just conveniently folds down from top to ass for that one shot when the APC enters the main structure itself, all to spec to get under that door with low clearance.

Also, when the figures emerge from the APC once they're inside, they hardly seem to come out of the APC itself, I don't recall any door slamming or interior shots. Last I watched, it looks more like an action trick where the figures simply emerge from behind the APC, in one shot, much more quietly than before. This contrasts with the drama/action of the original sortie and is a beat of quiet, meaning that things are getting serious now.

The hangar matte shot at meeting time establishes the existence of two (a second, backup) drop ship. Will review footage of drop ship #2 for 02 markings or similar. That matte shot reminds me of a similar one for Return of the Jedi when the Falcon is in a hangar with other rebel craft, wonder if the two had any techs in common.

The brief colony scene becomes more meaningful once you internalize that every last one of those people, man woman and child, got horribly, horrilbly bodied. This kid's mom died right in front of him, like the last victim, and then he himself went the same way. He was alive for like 30 minutes, two hours, something like that, and he could feel it moving, or at least he thought he did as he listened to the other horrible noises.

Burke is also written as being absurdly, cartoonishly evil, a continuation of the "evil company" theme from the original. He's so greedy that he's willing to try a cockamamie plot when his immediate and rational concern is to just survive, and he has no problem re-traumatizing Newt in the attempt (subjecting her to a facehugger is tantamount to child rape, Newt hides behind Ripley and stares Burke down knowing what he really is now, absolute evil). Hicks had been about to summarily execute him because he's too much trouble. On the other hand Burke may have more abstract, future-time orientation and may be focusing on how things will go for him upon return to Earth if Ripley's story gets out, corroborated now by real evidence. His calculation is still incorrect because he hazards his own immediate safety in-the-moment because Le Greedy Villain.

Two options really, call the dropship remotely from the first one, or the colony transmitter. But then again, they kind of did suspect a downed transmitter, so yeah...that only leaves the possibility of calling it from the original dropship. Bad planning, no redundancy. They were lucky the colony transmitter worked at all.

They can't possibly be moving at sublight speeds. Even with pretty fast FTL cryopods would make sense. I guess the movies wanted to avoid the stereotypical "drop us out of warp" stuff that looks flashy, but it had to be happening I don't care what any books or shit say

I always had a headcanon that a lot of colonists were kept alive but not facehugged until the marines showed up. In the first movie the writers suggested alien was at the end of its natural lifecycle and had crawled into the escape shuttle to die. If the sequel took that into account maybe the hive kept colonists in reserve to hatch fresh new aliens when a threat appeared.
(Yes, I know that nowadays aliens are considered essentially immortal, but that hadn't been established in the franhise yet)

Came here to say this. During the action an alien smashes through one of the APC's windows and attempts to pull Gorman out, but he gets stuck mid-way, then the alien injects him with something via his tale and lets go. Gorman is pulled back in but falls instantly unconscious. Then after the action there's lots of discussion about what exactly the alien did to Gorman, and Bishop studies him in the med bay and discovers the poison, and works out this is how the alien subdues their prey - by injecting the poison via their tale which knocks them out, so they're easier to drag away and cocoon in their nest. I have no idea if it was only changed to him just being knocked out by falling boxes due to budget reasons, as it may also have been because it introduces a completely new facet to the alien, or perhaps Cameron feared the audience would think Gorman would have something growing inside him and would be confused when he woke up and nothing happened to him.

Exactly. And directors don't understand that this was the best part of the alien series. It's very important to the first and second movie (the best ones). It drives all the character's actions. The Nostromo crew is in awe and wonder at discovering and exploring the ship. They're expecting friendly aliens like ET or something in Star Trek. The colonists even are expecting the same thing. If anything, they're expecting it to be long dead and safe to mess around with. The Marines think it's a big joke. The only thing they deal with is rebel colonists or soldiers from a rival faction. As soon as later movies/tv shows/games start retconning it to there being hundreds of aliens all over and they've been dealing with hostile aliens for centuries INCLUDING THE XENOMORPHS, well then the entire series is just farcical.

I like that Burke wasn't a one dimensional evil villain. He didn't intend to get anyone killed and would have saved everyone if he could. He did want to get the alien for a payday. That's reasonable and understandable. He's the only one that believed Ripley and wanted to verify her story. Ripley acted like an insane crazy woman really when she's just hysterically demanding to immediately launch nuclear weapons at their trillion dollar, decades old colony. With basic enlisted nobody grunts backing her up. Burke was completely in the right and would have been on the hook for everything they did. So it's understandable that he's panicking as everything just keeps going wrong and he can't stop it.
