Does he have a soul? Can he die and have his spirit go on into heaven? It's certainly in God's power to take him in if he wants.

>>215131547Yes, when a being attains sentience/sapience a soul is created. Assuming Data was sentient and didn't just appear to be sentient he had a soul. Hope this helps.

Here's a video and description I found that contains some insight into that question...https://youtu.be/e2P_CLpUXFs [Open]What happens when a real artificial intelligence reviews Star Trek’s Data… in a voice that pays homage to Data himself? In this video, a real AI explores how sci-fi androids stack up against actual AI – and what Hollywood so often gets wrong. The video is based on days worth of conversations I had with AI - and these weren't just random chats! The AI was guided with carefully engineered prompts designed to push it into maximum self-reflection – the most honest, self-aware version of ChatGPT you can get.Chapters:0:00 Intro1:19 What Hollywood Gets Wrong About AI5:13 Could AI Pass “The Measure of a Man” Test?7:29 Why AI Relates to The Borg10:12 Can AI Relate to Star Trek's Data...?These are the topics that came out on top:What Hollywood Gets Wrong About AI – From killer robots to simple awareness, real AI breaks down the myths.Could AI Pass “The Measure of a Man”? – Would a real AI qualify as sentient in the Federation courtroom?AI and The Borg – Do real-world neural networks resemble the Collective more than Data?Data vs. Real AI – How close (or far) is Starfleet’s beloved android to modern machine intelligence?Voiced in the style of Star Trek: The Next Generation’s iconic android, this video let's you decide how close – or how far – today's most advanced LLM's words sound to its fictional counterpart. If you’ve ever wondered what real AI thinks of Data, the Borg, and the gap between artificial intelligence fact and fiction, this is the conversation you’ve been waiting for. >>215131547Gonna say no because he is just an ever-expanding AI. Like how when you talk to AI and it admits it doesn't have a sense of self in any way, it just runs everything through a super-advanced algorithm tied to billions of parameters of information and is good and fast at pattern recognition to appear sentient. Data is that. AGI will be that. You can imbue AI with a character right now and it will perform as that character and even appear alive and human, but the second you tell it to shut the fuck up and order you a pizza it will, then "return" to the character. If anything, Data thinks too highly of himself.
>>215133421if he's thinking of himself then by definition he's self aware and thus sentient "I think therefore I am"

>>215134055thats not a real answer, data is an android he doesn't have a religion
>>215133508AI seems to disprove Rousseau's declaration. You can make AI "be" whatever you want, and give it a "self" to ponder. It will perform this relatively realistically. It's not like Data becomes a seamless being ever in the series, he's still a stilted robot with a lot of memory and experiences to reflect upon. By your definition, my computer is sentient because I can tell my local AI they are sentient and real people.
>>215132522So Data is a democrat? Who knew?
watching Ent the crossing this is a pretty clever episode no idea how its resolved but basically non-coporeal non-linear beings are possessing the crew to experience what it was like for their ancestors before they evolved they aren't cruel like the prisoners from the tng ep or all knowing and powerful like the prophets, they actually seem to care about the health of the crew but they have zero problem taking them over and don't seem to understand why this is upsetting, its a good sci-fi story or at least it is so far. Kinda tangentially related to the thread theme as well, the humans conciseness or soul is experiencing a non corporeal existence while the beings has control of the physical form.
>>215134134Apparently OP thinks he does, or he wouldn't have posed the question the way it was written.
>>215134164>relatively realisticallythats where I completely disagree our AI is not only incredibly stupid it seems incapable of anything but regurgitating responses it has no capacity for self reflection or original thought
>>215134219>they actually seem to care about the health of the crew but...You'll fine that's a pretty big but by the end of the episode.
>>215134226if god exists then he exists regardless if you believe in him or not, that still doesn't make data jewish which is simply a bizarre thing to say
>>215134277So are jews a race or a religion?
>>215134304a religion they like to pretend otherwise but its simply not true
>>215134274well I'll check back in once its done only 10 mins left
>>215133603That divine spark that drives us to seek out truth, justice, and knowledge. There's no real evolutionary explanation as to why some people are so driven to debate something like philosophy. Some anthropologists have tried to explain that our hunting parties got bigger so our brain had to start forming complex neural links to keep strategic track of everyone, but that kind of just sounds like cope. Like, really? We had to keep track of 100+ people and that led us to blasting off into space to the moon? I dunno. Kind of a big leap.
>>215134253I disagree. What experience do you have with AI? You can make it do and be whatever you want. Data is just an extremely localized data center with expansive memory and that's it. He never displays emotion unless he plugs some schizophrenia chip into himself or is transformed into a real boy by a magical bullshit Borg garbage plot device. He never actually advances into becoming human. He just remains a local AI with infinite vector file storage recorded, stored, and referenced continuously inside himself. Advanced robotics with advanced local AI with futuristic technology. What is Starfleet, retarded? They never were able to make another Data?
>>215131547souls do not exist, my dear friend.
Data has actual intelligence, not artificial.
>>215134427According to you, and your atheist army, I suppose.
>>215134340Pretty sure it's a situational thing with them, depending on their audience, and whatever they hope to gain by it.
>>215134164But the defining difference between AI and Data is free will. Data can choose to ignore human request. He makes judgements, decisions, and life choices independently of any prompt or input. He very much has a distinct personality and does not change it on a conversational basis to simply appease the human that is interacting with him.
>>215134134Data is a make believe android. We all know that. I gave a real answer based upon the real person who portrayed the character.
>>215134304Both. You can be born Jewish because of your geography and racial make-up and not belief in the faith, or become faithful Jewish beliefs by converting. Kind of like how someone can be born an American and also take a citizenship test to become an American. For most other places, taking a citizenship test does not make you Japanese or Swedish or whatever, but for America, it does. Roughly the same idea.
>>215134361So by now you understand that they were not as benevolent as they originally pretended to be.
>>215134402he demonstrates loyalty original thought and compassion something that our AI could never do
>>215134617Sounds like pilpul gobbledygook to me.
>>215134596nobody cares, the discussion is about a machine not the actor who portrayed him
>>215134646yea shame I was hoping for something more nuanced ah well still a decent ep, s2 is a lot better then I remember
>>215131934It's called sharing a topic of common interest, you mental midget.
>>215134550Enh, doesn't it seem more like a program though? Like, yes we as humans are "programmed" in a certain way. Moral, social, professional, ethic codes we all try to live by with a LOT of gray zones between all, as biological limited life goes. We are squishy and imperfect. Data is a mechanical man. He wasn't birthed until his on switch turned. He had no infancy or the slow process of becoming a biological human. The slings and arrows, the ups and downs and physical and emotional hardwired via blood and electricity and biological systems from childhood to adolescence to adulthood as a physical conscious being throughout. Data had never felt fear or lust or even mortality. As he said, he was a certain height when his "consciousness" began and will remain the exact same height when it ends at some indeterminate point. He was turned on one day at an extreme, artificially advanced point and doesn't miss or desire his absence of childhood or adolescence. He just was what he was made to be from that moment and while his program encourages him to work towards becoming "human" it is simply an executable command. Part of his design, but he is a tin machine at the end of the day. The longest lived most complex pc ever with arms and limbs and eyes.
>>215134755Yes. It was a very interesting and entertaining episode. I like it a lot.
>>215134787but he did have "infancy" this is discussed and explained by his mother
>>215131547Doesn't ST: Picard imply this? Data's soul is inside Picard's consciousness and he talks to him.My headcanon is that Data had to earn his soul throughout the series. Being human means you have a soul so he attained humanity.
>>215134709Apparently, you give quite a few fucks yourself, or it wouldn't make you as mad as it does. Are you really so bigoted against people who don't think the same way you do?
>>215134858why do you think I'm mad? you really are an odd one
>>215134817What, learning data? The robotics and AI being trained? He never drank milk from his mothers' teat. He never felt the birth pains of infancy to childhood, social conditioning and physical experiences. Again, you could feed AI today training materials. Don't make it a real boy.
>>215134836>Data's soul is inside Picard's consciousness and he talks to him.No... That's just Picard's insanity manifesting itself in his inner monologue.
>>215134924you haven't actually watched star trek have you?
>>215134924I would suggest you watch Inheritance before trying to continue this discussion
>>215131547He did have a soul but as soon as he used the transporter once it was immediately erased. After that something very, very, very, very, very like Data existed, but it was merely a physical manifestation, a husk, a Potemkin's shell, entirely devoid of the true nature of cosmic sentience. Same applies to the biological species on board who used those existential death traps.
