That was underwhelming. Some nice character moments but other than that I feel like nothing of substance really happened? What exactly did this set up? The government wanting to imprison metahumans was pretty much already implied at the end of Superman was it not? Gunn hyped this up as some big climax but I feel like there really wasn't any big revelation. The doors sequence was fun I guess. The whole episode just felt rushed despite being the longest one, like they tried tying up every loose end as quickly as possible, it felt like watching a bunch of vignettes just checking off boxes.

Complete and total filler season, this could have been 5 minutes of Rick becoming in charge, and then the scene at the end. "We found a portal to a prison dimension, I'm putting you in there". Everything else was inconsequential. The lesbian breakup already happened their plot was "we're for realsies". The main romance was already established in season 1, just to unestablish it so they could reestablish it at the end. The nazi world didn't matter at all outside of Keith coming back later, potentially. Peacemaker's breakdown about being a death angel was settled immediately and conveniently, right after the concept was introduced. All of the character development was stuff that was "we fucked their character development early season in order to character develop the same shit late season". The last episode was padded with James Gunn's greatest music hits, bands playing on stages and slow mos of characters walking and being happy together. If you had captions on it's kinda hilarious to see it say "(song you've never heard) by (obscure band) plays" 20 times this episode. Oh and Peacemaker wasn't even Peacemaker this entire fucking season, no helmet no powers no killing NOTHING

So Gunn is about to put his own zany twist on the underwhelming Salvation Run miniseries without having established any villains to jettison to the prison world to begin with. The "gorilla" theory is the one that seems increasingly likely and would make up the "monsters" part of "Gods & Monsters". We are so obviously getting Monsieur Mallah & the Brain because Gunn is just itching to put a quirky, openly gay couple in front of viewers and couldn't get his wish initially with the Authority. Add in Grodd without any semblance of a DCU Flash and we're left with a cinematic universe equivalent of James Gunn picking up his favorite toys and smashing them together.
