They seem to forget the part about step 1, which is when someone decides to make an honest effort to stay sober. The reason sober people are so dull and joyless is because thats what drugs reduce you to when they're not in your system. They elevate the dopamine bar so high that there's absolutely nothing your brain can do on its own to come close anymore. That's why people become hyper religious, or like steveo, hyper industrious, they have bury themselves in some constant pursuit of fulfillment, because the only happiness they can find is in the abstract, i.e. "I have family, career, God, etc. in my life, these good things surely mean my life is good." Life becomes an exercise in convincing yourself you're happy, and it looks like a charade from the outside because it is. My problem is there’s people in there that legitimately think (and will tell you) people couldn’t get sober before AA and people can’t get/stay sober today without it. I bounced around a while till I realized I had what I needed inside. I credit AA for giving me what I needed to find my path and I’m eternally grateful.
