This is why everyone around me is talking about the original Tron. It's vocal marketing. Granted the original was great and ahead of its time. But what could they have possibly improved since then? I side with the clearheaded critics.

Saw it yesterday, only 3 of us in the theater. It was alright. Leto is the hunk. The Dude in the old grid was a highlight. It doesn't have much to do with Tron, just in name only. Conveniently explains away Kev & Sam's absences. Some nice filthy synth work courtesy of Reznor & Finch. Shoehorned pajeet. Depeche Mode. It's ok.

I have issues with it, but Ares is a genuinely decent movie. Basically it's better than Legacy in some ways, worse in others. The action is spectacular. Leto gives the role his absolute best. He's clearly trying so hard to make Ares a character with pathos. And he generally pulls it off. The scene where he meets Flynn is genuinely, good. There's this sense that he is being tested before he can take the allegorical holy grail. The religious elements of the original Tron are still simmer underneath. His heart is tested, and inside is nothing but that quality that Dillinger Systems found so disagreeable. Empathy for others. But Leto and the other actors make it work. I didn't feel there was any actor in the movie phoning it in. They all tried to make a meh script work.It lacks the emotional heart of Legacy. But it's a notch worse than Legacy at most. It has better action overall. I like some of Ares' music better, some of Legacy's. I do like the degree to which Legacy focused on the grid as a place that programs actually lived. That is sorely missing here. But overall, not bad at all.
