I tried duolingo and it's absolute shit. You can't learn languages with it and the people who think they can are learning somewhere else and just use duolingo for dopamine and to show off to people how far they got.The entire thing is memorization and trial and error, and not memorizing words and what they mean, just memorizing which buttons to press to get a bing bing wahoo award.I could ace the tests every day without being able to read what the words even are. Had to drop the app when I was just clicking away in advanced categories and realized I couldn't even read what the fuck it says.

Used to be that with every lesson(this is what Duolingo calls a section of the course, like the present perfect tense would be a "course" or household appliances would be a "course") you'd unlock you'd get a serious amount of drilling exercises regarding it, which reinforced new vocab and grammar points. But at some point in late 2023 they changed the program with the claim it was designed by language teachers who thought the first program was too monotonous and boring. So now when you started a new lesson and grammar point you had like 15 minutes worth of exercises, then you'd move on to things you've previously covered for a while and then return to the original lesson only like a week later and then it's like having to learn it all over again. this goes for all the stuff you're "recapping" instead of drilling the new lesson in your head too. apparently education experts told them this was the proper way to do it but on me the effect was opposite. first time I've ever felt like I'd never learn anything regardless of the effort I'd put inIf you want to memorize vocab just start watching content and make your own Anki deck
