Philip Marlowe doesn't suck, neither does the book, but I wholeheartedly agree with OP that this film does.

Bogart was hilariously miscast as Marlowe and for a long time absolutely queered the pitch in what slack-jawed Yankee-doodle-dandies, who would never go near a book, thought Marlowe was. Then theres Bacall, she can't act to save her life, just someone they put in films because Septics wanted something to wank over when they got home after the movie. A sort of old time version of Sidney Sweeney. And then, because Bogart and Bacall were "a couple" at the time they changed the plot and scripts to capitalise on this and create a buzz.

This was basically ground zero for those bad adaptations of source material where they just change things to appeal to American audiences and end up ruining the whole point or rendering something unwatchable. You can draw a direct line from this to modern Hollywood with things like brown Snow White, or changing the location of We Bought a Zoo from the picturesque Dartmoor Zoo in the UK to some bland location in LA. The rot might not have begun with this film but its where it solidified and congealed into the sloppy mess we see today.

Ironically, despite both of them changing key plot details or setting the best Marlowe films are Farewell My Lovely/Murder My Sweet (1944) and The Long Goodbye (1973). Both films should be watched immediately to scrub The Big Sleep and Bogat's shite, scenery chewing, phoned in version of Marlowe from your memories.

The Long Goodbye is the worst "noir" I've ever seen, if a movie about some whiny jew wandering around making quips even qualifies as a proper entry in the genre
