self concious horror. modern horror directors are scared of sincerity. their movies play with concepts and string audiences along with jump scares over a placid storyline. they also have the big fuck you ending because they couldnt end on a whimper after all that build up. they probably learned this from Tarantino who has ended his last couple of movies with a big bang because he spent so much time playing around that he cant go anywhere else.

After watching a few of the biggest "elevated horror" movies from the last decade, I just feel disappointed with normie's low expectations. Back in the day, horror movies were able to have themes while also supplying interesting subject matter or visuals, and these kinds of movies focus one to the detriment of the other. The results rarely even feel like horror movies.
