I hate being a former child actor.

It’s always disheartening when people, even well-meaning, bring up comments like this. Not because of the gay thing but because it feels as though I’ve been put into a past-tense category, relegated to a version of myself that no longer exists. That simple phrase brings with it a sense of nostalgia, but not in a comforting way, it's more like an indication that I’ve faded from the spotlight and that the version of me they remember is no longer relevant. It sucks because that I’ve lost something I worked so hard to achieve, as though my worth as an actor has been reduced to a memory, something that once was but is no longer part of the present.

I sometimes wonder if I chose the wrong time to pursue acting. Back in my day, there was still a sense of mystery around actors; people would watch you on screen and imagine you only in that one dimension. But now, social media allows fans to follow every move of their idols, creating a constant connection that never existed when I was growing up in the business. In some ways, it’s like I’ve been left behind in the evolution of celebrity culture. Despite social media being around in some form during my time, it didn’t quite shape the industry like it does now, and that disconnect makes me feel like I missed the boat.

I can’t help but feel jealous about actors like Owen Cooper, who have found their place in this social media-driven era, with millions of Instagram followers. It’s not that I regret my journey, it’s just hard not to feel like I’ve missed out on something that might’ve given me the kind of lasting recognition I now see younger actors enjoying.

The last time I acted in anything was in 2015, in a short episode of a CBS series. After that, I tried auditioning and sending my resume, but I never managed to get anything else in my acting career, nobody ever hired me again. My most relevant role was in a trilogy, I was expecting to reprise my role in the third movie but they called someone else, saying that appearance no longer fit the character.

Change, rebrand, make some real meaningful art. You'll probably never be a household name again. But you can make it a name you're proud to have.

This is exactly why being an actor is dangerous work. You quite literally live in a person's head until God gives them the grace to move on or they die. Keeping actors in a box as the characters they portray is actively dangerous yet a ton of us do it because we feel "entitled" to the character and thus project familiarity onto the actor. How could you reciprocate my affection if I see you in the street? You've been part of a production that's played in my home for...years.... you're practically family. And if I masturbate to you then I feel like I'm entitled to and even own a part of you. I give you my money. My time. And now even my blood in the form of semen. This reshapes a person's psyche. That's how you get men and women who never come to realization that having a "crush" is a joke and that continuing to pine for an actress you had a thing for as a child when she's now married and has children of her own but still has to be the subject of your sexually immoral fantasies because you spiritually can't let go of her creates dangerous levels of depression and stimulates a longing that can never be truly realized. You're on demand because I can pull you up to me through a screen wherever I am in the world. You're always in my pocket. My thoughts. My heart. The center of my lust and object of my desire. To be attractive and presented in a positive light to millions of people around the world is a death sentence. Some men and women can't go to sleep at night without ruining themselves to the image of their "favorite".

It's horrid stuff. I'm sorry you go through it. I'm glad you weren't raped into it or stayed in the game.

well Jacob, in the end life is about change and loss comes to everyone. it is up to you to be grateful for what you had, and whether to hold onto it or let go and move on. you will always be the sum of your past memories, and those memories are where we continue to derive our happiness from whether we realize it or not. you would not feel the things you do right now if your life turned out different

Better for others by them having it best they can. Mostly by making it, taking it from eachother. Art. Sex. Too sacred to call love, but it is.

They are it. Can't not be.

I mean, lots of people peak in high school.

If you were in something bigger, you might've been able to spin it into e-fame these days, like some Disney syndicated TV slop. As is, it's bit parts. The odd weirdo messaging you about how he wanted to fuck you when you were 10 wouldn't have translated to lasting fame, even if you were active today.

Most cute kids don't become cute adults, and a lot don't even become cute teenagers, which is probably what happened to you. Acting is ultimately about looks, and how many dicks you can suck for roles.

Why don't you do indie films?
I see many cool ones, maybe you can triumph there or, at least, enjoy the experience and some money.

The industry is seriously beyond saving. It needs effective checks and balances to stop the rampant nepotism and abuses of power. But, like with politics and every other industry, the people in charge have zero incentive to implement anything like that.
Maybe our ai overlords will save us

Don't know if op is still here but:

My father was a semi pro football player (soccer) and a Uni professor. He was the man in our small city, who ever needed smth would come to him and he'd be able to help.

Then he had strokes, which noone realised at the time, making him first strange in the head and then slowly but steadily incapable of walking.

You can imagine him sitting in his chair, reeking of piss because he couldn't hold it in anymore, barely understandably talking about his past

We as a family tried our best, as did the doctors, and he came back somewhat, being able to walk slowly again and being able to speak normally, but he'll never be the man, _the_ man, he was.

But he still has his moments where he is really happy, mostly when playing with his grandchildren, my sons.

Now, OP, you're in a similar situation - you had your peak and you seemingly will never be able to get it back. But your advantage over my father is that you are healthy and fairly young, so you can start a new life with new goals and new peaks. They might not be as high as the old ones, but they'll still fill you with pride and a meaning.

Also, take cipralex/escitalopram.
