>A movie with 10/10 special effects, 10/10 dialogue, 10/10 acting, 10/10 action sequences, and 10/10 music, was considered below-average in 2007 because "it was long and the plot was a bit convoluted"
Were audiences just THAT spoiled back then?
>>
I felt the climax was underwhelming, especially with no kraken. Still not a bad movie though.
>>
Only the special effects are 10/10, everything else is average

Everyone says that about the kraken, but what do people really expect out of the kraken returning? It's presence would dominate the final fight and it'd just be a retread of the DMC fight. I don't see anything new they could've added to it.

The kraken getting uncerimoniously killed off I think was a good thing because they pretty much did everything they could with it and it tied in well with the theme of the third movie, the end of piracy and the unknown and magic becoming tamed and mundane.

any series or movie trilogy that ends in some big battle almost always is a giant let down, you cannot prove me wrong.

This, expectations subverted
>>
>10/10 acting
So you have watched 5 movies in your entire life?

I think for it to be "expectations subverted" there would need to be no kraken fight at all. They build it up and then kill it. You get the fight sequence in the second movie where it was built up, and the actions of the protagonists inadvertently lead to it getting killed in an unexpected way in the third movie.

But they were never gonna top "Hello beastie" so I don't get what people who wanted the kraken to return would've expected from its fight in AWE.

I think it was a better trilogy ender than Matrix 3 at least.

Outside of Orlando Bloom the acting is really good. 10/10 is a bit hyperbolic though.
>>
>>215211164
Only the first one was good. Being better than shit done later doesn't improve anything

>Were audiences just THAT spoiled back then?
Absolutely. We didn't know how good we had it. Even 5-6/10 slop up until about 2012 looks like masterpieces compared to 2020s slop. Prometheus and The Counselor, e.g., BTFO modern flicks, and we bitched about those endlessly when they came out. NuRidley slop except for Napoleon is megakino compared to what we have today.

Yes. They got lotr.

That's like saying cake is better than 3 day old mcdonalds. That's not a high bar. World's End is a better finale than Return of the Jedi, and I say that as someone who likes Return.

Orlando is considered a bad actor? I thought he was fine, in fact Pirates is probably his best performance next to Kingdom of Heaven. The character of Will fits his style very well and he gives some very good minor reactions.
>>
>>215211255
It’s really more that the kracken just makes the sea too dangerous to justify sailing on, so it would make the third “landlubbers of tortuga” instead of pirates of the Caribbean
>>
>>215211453
nah only the Beckett guy was legit good
Depp and the guy playing Barbosa are hamming it up
Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley can't fucking act
Davy Jones is a CGI
>>
>>215211534
Hard disagree. I haven't seen the PotC in a few years but I can't think of a single bad performance. Even the bit parts felt perfectly on-point casting.

PotC had some of the best casting you could ask for in a movie, no actor I'd swap out really.
>>
>>215211513
He isn't terrible, but his style and the type of character Will is comes off as bland and dull compared to the rest of the cast. He's playing the straight man sure so he gets the job done.

>>215211534
Hamming it up in this kind of movie was to the movies benefit. It's not high art its adventure entertainment. Depp, Rush, Nighy are all great in this context.
Jonathan Pryce is a certified great actor too, but he doesn't have a whole lot to do throughout the trilogy.

SOMEBODY FINALLY SAID IT! I'M TIRED OF PEOPLE PRETENDING THAT AT WORLD'S END ISN'T KINOMATOGRAPHY AT ITS FINEST
>YO HO! ALL HANDS! HOIST THE COLORS HIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH!

Yes, proof that you need a script that isn't abysmal garbage because nothing else matters if you don't have it.

It really was too long.

Killing it is fine, having it happen offscreen and be casually mentioned later is a bit lame given that it was the big threat of the previous film. It’s handled with all the dramatic impact and grace of when an actor doesn’t want to come back for a sequel and they have to briefly acknowledge it before moving on

Oh, wait, I was talking about the first one.

Dead Mans Chest and At Worlds End are both retarded and too long. Black Pearl was great though
>>
>>215211164
It's because people still had standards back then and didn't just gobble slop 24/7.
>>
I'm not even joking, but one of the reasons it worked so well was because of natural diversity. Africans, native Mesoamericans, Asians, etc. You could find everyone to be present at natural locations and in a logical context throughout all movies. No black british officers or arabic natives.
>>
>>215215069
Somehow the movies make the bizarre pirate world believable. They go to great lengths to flesh out the setting.
>>
>>215211164
Why is there like five fucking potc threads up right now
>>
>>215211609
No, it was too wet.
A good two thirds of the movie is set at night during rain.
>>
>>215211255
characters dying offscreen is bad and you should feel bad for justifying it
