Arthouse and Classic cinema

>/film/ QOTD
Let's hypothetically suggest a catastrophic scenario where all film archives, writings on cinema, film equipment, physical media collections, etc. were simultaneously destroyed and people's memories of the medium were all eradicated. A return to a pre-Lumiere, pre-Melies, pre-Griffith, pre-everything environment.
Do you think a new filmic culture could still develop and gain popularity? Or is the existence and prevalence of the medium a vestigial limb from an era that's long gone? Is Peter Greenaway correct in his assessment that 'we can live without cinema' (as, unlike most other artforms, it has only been present for a small part of human history)?

Peter Greenaway is indeed correct, and the loss of his films would be a shame in that scenario, Draftsman, Macon, Prospero, Thief are interesting works. Cinema as a whole would be difficult because those who would play with it in a neo-novel cinematic universe would likely be unable to gather a crew sufficient to build their vision(s).

>Do you think a new filmic culture could still develop and gain popularity?
No, because films are no longer shot on film. I do foresee next decade a wave of mega budget religious films ushered in by the zoomer/millennial revolution and their last grasp at a neo traditional lifestyle. I think megachurch and cineplex will coalesce into one and this might even be interesting in that it could produce an epic of hysteria. The Avatar movies already hint and edge on this possibility and collective visual experiential hunger albeit in secular fashion. The technology and autodidactic tendencies of highest functioning zoomers will produce at least one movie maker with talent to do this, merging religious mass cult and theatrical audience, studio lot and megachurch, replacing Hollywood's void as it fragments overseas due to Israel's competitive surge.

But democratized film culture as Westerners knew it is being simultaneously dismantled until it's the restricted realm of elites, meaning that physical media will be made unobtainable and eventually illegal outside fringe gray and black markets because "Media" companies are in lockstep with anti-ownership technocracy and the breakaway of the 10% from the 90%, returning to the horror of Greater Israel's inevitable rise and supremacist vision of America as a vassal plantation to exploit. These media companies will begin to lock away swaths of films deemed unacceptable for mass consumption, literally stripping away the vibrancy of the past until it's spoken of like verboten delusion and drowned in a flood of AI slop and interactive surveillance hybrid entertainment.

Greenaway is short sighted and not the brightest. It's not that "we can live without cinema" it's that Zionists want everyone to live without in general. They need to breed out creativity because it sparks physical and psy rebellion, which is why movies are what they are today, demoralization spectacle. Leading many to seek shelter in Christian revival

The greatest film of the last 100 years is Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This should have the reputation that Citizen Kane does, and even came out two years before it (1937 vs 1941)

If it's not Snow White, then what can it possibly be? Snow White does so many things at once.

>invents a new artform and perfects it at the same time
>mass entertainment and commercial success
>critically acclaimed

I am probably the only actual film historian on /film/ (I have done several audio commentaries including on early Gaumont releases). The live action canon gravely underrates the history of animation and believes it to be a subset of cinema, hence, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs lack of presence on Sight & Sound.

You would be gravely mistaken if you believe animation is for babies. Even a film like Who Frames Roger Rabbit (this would land in my top 25) is more important than films like Citizen Kane and The Godfather. Then there is Vertigo and 2001, films that are only important due to the John Whitney and Douglas Trumbull special effects, but then even Silent Running is more important in that regard.

Sometimes I wonder how Eisenstein would have reacted if he lived to see films like Tron or Nintendo Entertainment System videogames like Metroid, Boy and His Blob and Myst, which present a simulation with free will.

The list of the greatest films of all time includes no Antonioni, no Bresson, and no Stanley Kubrick. It includes Trip to the Moon, The General, Sinbad, Snow White, Star Wars, Tron, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Polar Express.

In the future, people will not even know the name Hitchcock. Vertigo will be a famous film because it was the first film to utilize CGI special effects with John Whitney's computer programming credit sequences.

16 mm slop is slop because 16mm strips image of visual identity and mashes it into homogenous slurry. Watch Du Cote d' Orouet, Celine & Julie and Le Rayon Vert one after another and it's the same fucking joint.
There are exceptions though, see high contrast b&w of Faces for example. B&W 16mm in general looks better than color, to mention Rivettranny again see L'Amour Fou.

eventually i will get back to watching film on a regular basis to present this general with quality posts. as of right now however my heart has been exposed to an emotional break from a girl who had been the first park romance of my life. im not sure what happened, but the day after we got physically intimate (holding hands for a brief moment) she was no longer willing to see me. the next thing to occur was her husband showing up where she usually parks in the early morning for our walk. it only lasted a week, the romance, so i'm not entirely hurt by it. it does hurt thoughbeit. the next movie i plan on watching? van helsing 2004.

NEON bought this flick for distribution in the US before the Cannes premiere and even posted a teaser but then it got scathing reviews and I think they might have quietly canned it's release or something cause it's been radio silence since then.
A shame cause despite me not being a big fan of Ducornau's previous two films I thought there were hints of potential in Titane and the mixed reviews for art cinema often signify that it's something actually interesting. The problem with Titane is that it's "heavy" drama parts didn't really have actual weight to their transgressivenes, Ducornau is no Philip Gröning, but there were good ideas and that purple lit party scene is great.

>Let's hypothetically suggest a catastrophic scenario

So what happens to smartphone's in this scenario? Do they just disappear as well? Do they not have cameras or can they only record stills for some reason? Cinema is the pretentious word for moving images and as long as some mechanism exists to make moving images, people will eventually extend it to a long form and make stories around the 60 minute and over length that would qualify as a feature length motion picture. And if you go by Academy Award rules, as long as it's 40 minutes long it is considered a feature film and that would be even easier for people to instantly develop. And if you're definition of "cinema" includes short films, there are people making shorts on TikTok, YouTube and Instagram that make most of the shit in theaters look old, dated and unoriginal. So do social media videos also disappear or are you only referring to pretentious shit that only plays in movie theatres and nowhere else?

One of the most ferocious niggas ITTs lost the hunger today.
Now he's just a basic bitch like every other anon on /tv/, pushing mid out onto the masses...
It's sad: kinda like watching Alex DeLarge giving up on raping and killing. Demoralizing, even. RIPiss, G.

>there are people making shorts on TikTok, YouTube and Instagram that make most of the shit in theaters look old, dated and unoriginal.
There are zero (0) seconds of art on social media.
>>
>>215249897
Depends on how you define art. Art on a fundamental level is something fictional meant to evoke emotions through sensory stimulation. Social media content does just that if it's a story they're telling. Is it lowest of lowbrow? Absolutely. I believe something being art doesn't require (You) liking it. I don't like it either, but actually I changed my mind about this while writing. Ignore.

Not sure it belongs here, but has anyone seen this? Sorrenkino + Serkino has a soft spot in my heart but I can't find a torrent.

It's not available yet. The film is still doing its festival rounds.

Ah I didn't know. Hadn't checked what Sorrentino was doing in a while and this popped up. I'll be watching for a download.

I believe the streaming release is on December 25th, if the release schedule on IMDb is to be trusted.
