Illustration is a dying art.

When I was a kid, I still remember VHS cover art in my local Blockbuster and the mom & pop video rental store. You don't see that kind of artwork anymore. The same for movie posters.

Shit even movie trailers used to show not tell if you compare it to the last 15-20 years.

I'm hating this shitsack world cutting corners.

I still have a copy of the tutorial where he paints the Hellboy poster. The only tutorial he ever did, as far as I know. I will treasure it forever. Such amazing talent, skill, and knowledge, all lost now.

I feel this way for anything hand-made. Whether it's artwork or costuming or practical effects.

Yeah I like CGI and other modern conveniences of digital tech, but there was a charm that pre-90s productions had to make do with what they had.

I mean look at the rotoscope of the Terminator chasing Sarah and Reese from the original movie. That shit is more terrifying and realistic than any CGI model can do.

Sharing this post I found elsewhere;

>My favorite Struzan story is that he was doing the poster for Indy at Disneyland, but they didn't have the rights to Ford's likeness. Fed up with working around the problem, Struzan just called Ford and was like, "hey, can I use your face for this," and Ford said, "if it's for you, absolutely."

I met Drew at a comic expo in Canada a few years ago (2022?) and no one knew who he was. He had a booth near e-celebs and pro cosplayers and people must of assumed he made fanart or some shit.

I got to talk with him for a good 45 minutes, the man who illustrated my childhood. Goonies, adventures in babysitting and all the stuff already posted above. I had him sign my 1978 star wars "circus poster" which he made for the theatrical re-release before empire. Apparently that is George Lucas' favorite movie poster of all time and the original art is hanging in his office. Pic related. He was a delightful human being and was just happy to have someone to talk to.

I think it's because Struzan mixed a lot of mediums together - paint, markers, colored pencils etc. You couldn't quite place what kind of painting it was at a glance, but it looked unique, and bit unreal, and always fantastic. Also, his best paintings all spark imagination with little details like action scenes tucked at a side somewhere, yet it all melds cohesively and clearly sends a message that this film must be fucking cool.

This is all you have to look forward to in the future. Imitation. Repetition. If everyone can go look at everything everyone ends up seeing the same things. The smaller the niche the more thoroughly it will be collated, categorized and packaged for consumption. You don't rent some ransom movie and find a gem. You find a genre and consume it top to bottom as it's already been organized for you by those who came before to facilitate your consumption.

People used to exist in local bubbles. There was a lot of variation is experience. This leads to diversity of ideas. Now everyone is in the digital gulag. We're going to be on a hamster wheel of the same soulless shit until the end of time or the end of the system. There will be no new art until the wheel of time turns.

>Amazing artwork can elevate your perception of a movie, make it seem better or more epic than it is
Cutthroat Island's poster is probably the best thing about the movie

Some are extremely based, but sad to see that he's also fallen for the
>orange
>blue
meme. I wonder now if it wasn't him that invented and/or popularized it.

Why did WB quit using Struzan for the Harry Potter movies after the first one? His soulful posters looked so much better than the photoshopped slop that they used in the other movies.

His works were so rich looking and evoked feelings of comfort as well as excitement. AI can't do that.
>>
Rest in peace, Drew. I'm a huge fan of your work and like another said, I never really knew your name.
Keep posting Struzans, show off his magical work
>>
>>215248325
We should make it a point to post at least one pic of his work here every day.
