>Drew Struzan the legendary illustrator behind some of the most iconic and beloved movie posters of all time has died. He was 78.
RIP, most kino posters of all time
It's amazing how movie posters are a lost art. They're so shitty now. There's no effort at all.
>lost him in the same monthoof
WHERE IS THE FUCKING STICKY
Damn I had no idea. What a baddest. F
>>215234025Badass*
>>215232908RIP
>>215232908IF HE WON'T GET A STICKY, WE RIOT!!!
>>215233795Agreed. He deserves a sticky more than Woody Allen in a dress did.
Sticky this jannies.
>>215232908Sad, he made posters epic.
Illustration is a dying art. When I was a kid, I still remember VHS cover art in my local Blockbuster and the mom & pop video rental store. You don't see that kind of artwork anymore. The same for movie posters. Shit even movie trailers used to show not tell if you compare it to the last 15-20 years. I'm hating this shitsack world cutting corners.
I still have a copy of the tutorial where he paints the Hellboy poster. The only tutorial he ever did, as far as I know. I will treasure it forever. Such amazing talent, skill, and knowledge, all lost now.
>>215233375Is like hollywood lost their souls, once he was replaced not by a new painter stud but by a software graduate with potosoup they lost the will to live
>>215234829And now those same Photoshop hacks are being replaced by AI. Oh well...
>>215232908apparently he alzheimers the last few years and didn't even remember doing his paintingsthis is why i have an exit plan
>>215234789>Such amazing talent, skill, and knowledge, all lost now.I feel this way for anything hand-made. Whether it's artwork or costuming or practical effects. Yeah I like CGI and other modern conveniences of digital tech, but there was a charm that pre-90s productions had to make do with what they had. I mean look at the rotoscope of the Terminator chasing Sarah and Reese from the original movie. That shit is more terrifying and realistic than any CGI model can do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUshGHTsWYg
No point keeping these uncs around when ai can do the same thing better and faster.
>>215234888faster and cheaper yesbetter, no, never
>>215232908The GOAT movie poster artist. Nobody even comes close. Not even his imitators
>>215234869Yeah, agree. Hollywood can keep its soulless slop. Fortunately there is still old media around to last me a lifetime.
>>215234869Everyone points out that the Arnold puppet head looks like shit. But that's only when it's shown in bright lighting spoiling the whole gag. In the tanker truck chase, the puppet Arnold looks cool and creepy with the dim lighting and its carved out cheek.
>>215232908I hate Temple of Doom, it sucks. Stinks about Drew, however.
>>215235104TOD is the best Indy movie, truest to its character and genre, best action, best sidekick, best villan
F
>>215235183Based
>>215235068The whole point that Arnold's face falling apart and looking creepy is that it's blatantly obvious the Terminator is the slasher villain ala like Jason Voorhees and his zombie flesh is decomposing due to damage. And yeah it was pretty fucking creepy in dimness. >>215235104>>215235183Temple of Doom is comfy as fuck. Give me that over Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny.
>>215232908>>215232927Pretty sure Thomas Jane in The Mist is based on him. Which would make sense considering Frank Darabont had him do the poster for Shawshank Redemption.
>>215232908Damn. RIP to the GOAT. His artwork changed the game forever and personally gave me countless memories by staring at his work for hours on end. Eternally grateful.
>>215234119Goddamn, he did the Beyond Thunderdome poster too? I was a huge fan of this guy apparently, and didn’t even know his name.
>>215235104I appreciate it for stepping outside the Jew revenge fantasy comfort zone.
>>215232908He made posters better than the actual movies
>>215235462This is a good post
Sharing this post I found elsewhere;>My favorite Struzan story is that he was doing the poster for Indy at Disneyland, but they didn't have the rights to Ford's likeness. Fed up with working around the problem, Struzan just called Ford and was like, "hey, can I use your face for this," and Ford said, "if it's for you, absolutely."You know you're a king when Ford tells you to fuck the mouse
>>215232908For me it's the Dark Tower poster that wasn't even a real poster.
>>215235670How the fuck do you get the rights for Indiana Jones, but not for what he looks like?
>>215235670helps that Ford didn't want anyone else to be portrayed as adult Indy
I met Drew at a comic expo in Canada a few years ago (2022?) and no one knew who he was. He had a booth near e-celebs and pro cosplayers and people must of assumed he made fanart or some shit.I got to talk with him for a good 45 minutes, the man who illustrated my childhood. Goonies, adventures in babysitting and all the stuff already posted above. I had him sign my 1978 star wars "circus poster" which he made for the theatrical re-release before empire. Apparently that is George Lucas' favorite movie poster of all time and the original art is hanging in his office. Pic related. He was a delightful human being and was just happy to have someone to talk to.
>>215235844That's amazing. And also really fucking sad.
>>215235693for me it's the pre-production poster of First Blood
>>215232927DamnRIP
>>215235104cry about it faggotTemple of Kino is still a 9/10
>>215234789What did he do, arrange promo photos and paint over them?
>>215232908Sticky this shit you faggot tranny redditors
>>215236392>paint over themFuck no, he is portrait artist. He is given a photo to look at for reference, does a rough sketch and then Airbrushes the fuck out a canvas. Old school skills that are vanishing in the digital age. This is the video the other anon mentioned (hellboy):https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=C03nUaKjDPw

>>215236701has this girl ever been identified?
We would have gotten a sticky but yo dumbass posted a thumbnail
>>215235844Glad you met him, anon. I feel much the same way, he illustrated my childhood. It's good to know that he had someone of intelligence to talk to while e-whores got more attention. And that IS a badass poster.
>>215236834>he illustrated my childhoodHow long did that take him?
>>215236919'bout tree fiddy
RIP. Not surprised that nu-Lucasfilm didn't invite him back for Star Wars or Indy 5
>>215232908Big F, the world grows poorer
F>>215233375I think someone in that thread said that we don't get painted posters any more because the modern audience will think it's an animated film.
>>215237301He retired in 2008, then got Alzheimer's disease.
>>215236919You don't know how long childhood is?
>>215234119Is that Guillermo Del Taco? Why is he holding a gun?
>>215237802its Hellboy's big fucking gunDel Toro directed Hellboy and comissioned Drew to do the poster for the film with his own money
>>215237850Nice. Del Toro has a good taste in art and production design. Shit director though.
>>215236608Very cool, I have to hunt down the full tutorial vid
>>215232945bomp
>>215233375all of these posters and art have been engraved into my mind as a child and will be there until I die.I don't know who the zoomer equivalent of this artist would be today, but I hope this generation has someone like that. RIP Drew Struzan.
>>215236286Preproduction poster?
>>215238788>I don't know who the zoomer equivalent of this artist would be today, but I hope this generation has someone like that.Even if there is, who is going to notice him from under the avalance of all the bad Photoshop and AI slop? And by some miracle something unique pops up, that style and voice will be immediately consumed the AI maw and regurgitated back as infinite soulless variations and copies until it all loses its meaning.
Couple weeks ago Renato Casaro died, author of posters for Sergio Leone amd for many italian ads of american movies, pic related. Also in march Enzo Sciotti died. His Blue Velvet poster was absolute kino.Horrible year for poster artists, a form of art that unfortunately is declinig, Novecento is dying slowly. Back in the 60s a good poster could attract a lot of people to cinemas
>>215238878to raise money from investors, when Kirk Douglas was gonna be Trautman
>>215238890Just like with the original Robocop poster, I always thought that Rambo 3 poster was a photo. My mind was blown.
>>215232908massive loss, may he rest in peace>>215235462this is true
>>215232958the mid to late 90s is when we started to see really shitty, low-effort posters of actors badly photoshopped holding onto non-existent objects or standing around in a void. being cheaper aside, it just showed the masses genuinely did not care about high-quality illustration and it's a fucking shame. movie tickets were unaffected and that's all the beancounters saw
>>215238993Same with visual effects, really.
>>215238938Yeah they were hyperrealistic to the point of being more realistic that photos, see pic related .Also like Drew Struzan they have a somehow opaque, foggy style that made them feel exciting, not sure how to express this
>>215232908F
>>215232908AI can do the same, but faster, nothing of value was lost
>>215233375NO WAYuhhhh
>>215239088I think it's because Struzan mixed a lot of mediums together - paint, markers, colored pencils etc. You couldn't quite place what kind of painting it was at a glance, but it looked unique, and bit unreal, and always fantastic. Also, his best paintings all spark imagination with little details like action scenes tucked at a side somewhere, yet it all melds cohesively and clearly sends a message that this film must be fucking cool.
>>215239146Slop enjoying tard. AI can only do it by stealing from others.
>>215235670It's from an interview Drew did for TheRaider.net>>215235765Theme park rights weren't baked into the contract at the time. That's also why Star Tours couldn't use images of the actors from the movies (and only used the characters at the ride's one-time only grand opening stage show)
he had been legendary for a while, now he's been promoted to eternal.where the fuck is the sticky?
>>215239569Who wush the name of the rowsh?
>>215232908RIP based master Struzan thanks for all the kino posters
>>215232927The Thing is the only one of these that doesn't look like ass
Outmoded by AI. No tears for he.
Sticky it up janny
>>215238788Especially the VHS era, as the tapes often sometimes had different covers than the theatrical trailers. This man did so much of what I grew up with.
>>215232927>most kino posters of all time#1 slot is taken.
>>215232958>be shitty "B" movie>get amazing Italian posterThose were the days.
I miss good posters so much, I'm so sick of photoshop heads.
>>215232958>>215232958Lots of stuff is lost tech now>space shuttles>moon landing >supersonic passenger jets >gothic cathedrals >victorian houses >2D cel animation >nuclear power (for the West)Go watch talk shows or game shows from the 70s. People talked so much faster and never went “um” or “like” every 2 seconds. We’re literally getting dumber
The one he never really gets credit for is his best imoLook at that, just look at how fucking good that poster is
>>215240077>Farrah*sigh*
>>215232927Pure SOVL Zoomers and AI will never be able to recreate what he's done
I love movie poster art. There is so much amazing shit out there that no one will ever see again. There should be a dedicated museum for the form. I've been to some smaller gallery showings but it's not like what a real full on museum could be. I could go full ham on this thread with my files.
>>215240077Guy was amazing at capturing likenesses. They're always spot on.
Is this Struzan or someone apeing the style?
>>215240526composition is pretty bad, i'd say it was the kid who did a lot of Struzan imitation on theraider forum back in the day
What was his last movie poster?
>>215240526I thought that could have been Ethan Pro, who was friends and almost seemed like a protégé of Struzan. Ethan is an amazing artist.https://artofethanpro.com/
>>215240604probably How to Train Your Dragon 3
>>215240777
>>215240671Adam Hughes is also very Struzan-like when he goes hyperrealisticThey are all heavily inspired by Adolphe Mucha's line work

>>215241131most likely the alzheimers was already affecting his judgement and skills
>>215240808TFA was two years before and still got it
>>215241171these are apparently from 2019, his last poster before these ones was the one for The Force Awakens in 2015 and that one, while technically good is just bland for his standards
>>215240808>>215241231These are fucking garbage. Old guy needed to try again wtf???

>>215241369Why?
>>215241369yes he used Artistic Integrity to make them
Seriously how the fuck does Drew Struzan die without a stickyDo jannies even '80s
>>215241631I'm still mad they anthropomorphized the ships with "eyes". I mean I get why they did it but it could have been so much more interesting if they didn't.
>>215235844The story of that poster is pretty interesting. It launched his career as the poster maker for blockbusters, and is very popular among poster collectors.https://www.theforce.net/collecting/posters/anh/style-d.asp
i thought he died a month or two ago? or was that some other star wars artist?
>>215233375Boris Vallejo is fuckin 84 too
>>215241687Eh it's not a terribly good film. Surprised Spielberg even bothered putting his name to it desuSolid poster from Struzan as always though
>>215232908Maybe he'll get a four day sticky like that lesbian.
>>215241741I thought the same thing man. I think it was because back in March his wife announced he had Alzheimer's and it had gotten very bad.
>>215241741That was the Rambo III/Neverending Story nigger
>>215232908 drew his last struzan
rip legendweirdest thing is sometimes i see straight to video no budget garbage splurging out on posters trying to make them look cool like 80s classicsits just hollywood that doesnt give a shit anymore but theres still talent out there
>>215240851thats literally just hepburn kek
>>215242223>weirdest thing is sometimes i see straight to video no budget garbage splurging out on posters trying to make them look cool like 80s classicsThis is all you have to look forward to in the future. Imitation. Repetition. If everyone can go look at everything everyone ends up seeing the same things. The smaller the niche the more thoroughly it will be collated, categorized and packaged for consumption. You don't rent some ransom movie and find a gem. You find a genre and consume it top to bottom as it's already been organized for you by those who came before to facilitate your consumption.People used to exist in local bubbles. There was a lot of variation is experience. This leads to diversity of ideas. Now everyone is in the digital gulag. We're going to be on a hamster wheel of the same soulless shit until the end of time or the end of the system. There will be no new art until the wheel of time turns.

>>215234789I bought so many shitty-camcorder art tutorial DVDs in the 2000s, including that one. They’re comfy as shit. I can’t remember if that’s where he tells the story of finding his art for the Adventures in Babysitting poster face down on a wet floor in some studio outbuilding, and taking it home and restoring it. That stuck with me.
>>215232908I would never dispute his talent but I've never been a fan of his style. The closer to realism you get the less interesting the art.
>>215239292>can only do it by stealing from others. And what does artists do? Exactly. There is nothing original.
