Why is /tv/ like this?

Man of Steels box office only proves that audiences were excited to see a Superman movie and had good will with DC after Nolan’s generational defining Batman trilogy.
Remember, Man of Steel was being marketed off the back of the dark knight rises. The marketing had “From Chris Nolan” and “From the director of the dark knight trilogy” in all the ads and trailers. Snyder was nothing more than a director for hire at the time. Then the movie came out and everyone except third world Indians hated it. People had faith in the sequel because it had Batman in it. And look what happened with BvS: it had a record breaking opening weekend and a record breaking second weekend drop off. Everyone hated it. Word of mouth spread that it was terrible. And what should’ve been a 1.5-2 billion dollar movie came out to be a measly 800 million dollar flop that didn’t even break even. Don’t underestimate the brand damage MoS and BvS and Suicide Squad did to DC. The brand never recovered after this. Warner tried to pivot and hire new talent but it was too late, everything was flopped except Aquaman, which was really just a Jason Mamoa movie during his peak popularity.
Simply put? Man of Steel was a failure because it had Nolans name(plastered all over it as well) behind it at his peak.

Fact is the cape movies released in 2025 (Blacktain America aside) were overall better than the cape movies released in 2013, but they all made less money.

>>
>>215234835
Here's my unbiased opinion since I don't care about superheroes movies in general. The Snyder Superman movie came in a time where any superhero movie would easily break a billion dollars because it was the thing of the moment and we were talking about the most famous superhero in history at the time. The Gunn's superman came in a time where people no longer cared about superhero movies and the DC brand had been ruined after years of poorly critically accepted movies. Due to that, it's a miracle that the new movie was even profitable at all. There's not a specific person to blame since Disney, Warner, Sony and a lot of different people were equally responsible for killing capeshit. My spicy comment is that if the new Superman movie came out before the Snyder one, it'd probably make way more money than it did now because from what I know, Gunn knows the formula to make a popular capeshit movie, but 10 years ago or something. You could make the best superhero movie ever and people still wouldn't bother to watch it, that's why Disney is doing everything possible to bring people back to the movie theaters like bringing Robert Downey Jr back for example.
>>
>>215234835
It's called inflation, moron.
>>
>>215236935
I agree with this, also you have to factor in the pandemic. To this day audience numbers still aren't what they were pre-2020, and people's viewing habits have changed too. The numbers show that people who go to theatres these days are more likely to watch smaller budget, independent stuff than they were pre-pandemic, blockbusters just draw in a smaller percentage of viewers across the board.

If you're adjusting for inflation and claiming Snyder won, but ignoring the huge changes in consumer spending from 2013 to 2025, you're an idiot. A pandemic, a cost of living crisis, a decade of 'superhero fatigue', and a legacy of mid to terrible DC live action movies. It's a miracle Gunn's Superman broke even much less turned a profit.

SPOILER:I'm from the distant future where MoS has aged like a fine wine and is rightfully considered a classic Superman tale whereas Gunn's Superman (2025) is seen as something of a tonal misfire lacking the necessary gravitas the mythos demands. By 2013, the MCU already had The Hulk, Iron Man (1, 2, and 3), Thor (1 and 2), and The Avengers, while DC had only just begun with Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. DC then tried to rush to catch up with the MCU, similar to how James Gunn might be rushing now before potentially losing his job due to box office failures and especially if Warner Bros gets sold and their IPs change hands.
