This whole scene was fucking stupid. The reason pony tail guy spent 150k on education instead of going to the library is because going to Harvard looks better on a resume. Did people really think this scene was genius?
>>
its good because right before that he owned the pretentous guy but yes i also think that scene was cheesy and dramatic if it were irl the other guy would literally burst out laughing

>"Wood drastically underestimates the impact of social distinctions predicated upon wealth, especially inherited wealth..."
This quote does not seem to appear in Daniel Vickers' book - which, by the way, is not titled "Work in Essex County" but "Farmers and Fishermen: Two Centuries of Work in Essex County, Massachusetts, 1630–1850". Neither does the quote appear on page 98, nor anywhere else in the book.
Page 98: https://books.google.at/books?id=N1jUaJR5becC&pg=PA98
Mentions of "wood" throughout the book: https://books.google.at/books?id=N1jUaJR5becC&pg=PA98#q=Wood
And the kicker? Whereever a guy with the last name "Wood" DID get mentioned in the book, it was William Wood, not Gordon Wood.
Clark could have torn Will to shreds then and there.

>Did people really think this scene was genius?

I dont know where are you from but in the US, you just need to show you know the job for them to give you an opportunity. Is true they are not going to give you the interview but if you manage to get in the company you can get your way up really fast. I saw so many cases in my working life with big companies. Not to mention small companies.

The downside is they abuse you with the salary because you dont have the stupid paper.
>>
>>215237027
The whole point of university is to get the certificate AND make connections to already successful people who are just mostly dicking around. If you can’t do one or the other you should drop out and get a job, leech off the system/parents.
>>
All of the "smart" stuff in this movie is actually pretty dumb, even the equation he solves at the university in the beginning of the movie is nothing special. Ben and Matt didn't care about making any of that make sense, they just wanted to establish that the character is smart and then focus on the drama.
>>
>>215237027

>>
>>215238331
The script initially had a sex scene between Will and Chuckie. It wasn't meant to stay in, it was a test to see if the studio was reading the script.
>>
Yeah maybe, but at least he wasn't unoriginal.
>>
Chuckle wouldn't have told him to pursue a better future, he would've called him gay and said the right thing to do is stay in your neighborhood forever. Also, lend me 20 dollars. No group of friends would gift their friend a car for their birthday. That is more fantastical than the eiditic memory.
>>
This scene made no sense because why would Matt Damon have been reading all those boring ass textbooks if he wasn't even enrolled in school? Like who goes to the library and decides to read "American Economic policies in 1837" for leisure?

My manager kept telling me I was too smart for retail and I needed to do something better with my life. 20 years later I work in tech and regret it. Im too dumb for this kind of work. I was happier doing menial labor and hooking up with young female coworkers. The real tragedy is somehow i was too smart for retail but I am too dumb to be an engineer which I spent my whole adult life doing. Wasted over half my life in a shitty career.

I think that most midwits could certainly get the right qualifications if they wanted to. There are very few fields that actually require more than above intelligence, these are mostly revolved around STEM. If a person has above average intelligence (or even just average), they can succeed in almost every field. So, yeah I think it's mostly about motivation and circumstances does one get the degree or not.

The movie is totally nonsensical. If Will was as smart as the movie portrayed, then he was on a multi-millionaire within a decade tract. I'm not as smart as that fictional character who has apparently supernatural intelligence and I made enough money to take care of my friends to such an extent that the U.S. government came after me. In Will's case he could have made enough money to cut all his friends checks for $500,000, retired, and used his wealth for whatever personal reasons or causes he wanted. In real life it's not quite that cut and dry because we're not geniuses with eidetic memory, but that movie is like the Flash struggling with winning the 100 meter sprint.

I initially adored Good Will Hunting until I realized that it was written by two Middle-upper class fratboy douchebags, with Damon having went to Harvard no less, and both from privileged households that caused them insecurity about their masculinity reflected in GWH's script...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Damon#Early_life_and_education

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Affleck#Early_life

Will Hunting is a mathematical genius who works a shit job as a janitor and hangs around with his working class friends until he's able to get past his psychological hangups and decides to move on with his life.

It's the fantasy of Damon and Affleck that they're smarter than everyone but want to make people think they're tough guys from the streets yet can walk away from that life anytime they want to because of their profound intellect and get a high paying job due to their intelligence.

You'll also notice that Will doesn't fall in love with a working class woman but one that's a trust fund baby who's studying to be a doctor ensuring that he and her will enjoy a wealthy life of upward mobility which symbolizes Damon and Afflecks fear that they'd spend the rest of their lives as wage slaves, explicitly expressed by Affleck in the scene at the construction site with Damon where he laments about his station in life and fear that he knows he'll never rise above it.

Oh well, I guess sucking Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Smiths cocks paid off in the end!!!FACT!!!
>>
>>215237027

>>
>>215242922
The original plot was more about government agencies trying to recruit him, more thriller, the only real mentions of this in the finished product is the NSA scene. Someone gave them advice saying it was stupid and the drama of the character was more interesting.

So it's not like two pseudo intellectuals up their own ass made a drama. It's more like two idiots made a thriller until someone told them it was hacky and they made a drama based on the advice.
>>
>>215240141
It's proven the opposite. Look at you. You're that, and that all. A wish for wrong to be taken as right.

You take progress, and make it abandoned because it's linked with torture etc done intentionally for the torturers profit. You are not the world. You are it's enemy.
>>
>>215237027

"At least I'll be original"

Yeah by doing exactly the same thing he just did, reciting shit that he only knows because he read it, then threatening violence while this should have been the other guys response...

"How intellectual, how about you stop being a faggot and hit me right now in front of all these witnesses so I can sue you and you'll be working for me the rest of your life?"

I'd like to take this moment to also talk about the difference between KNOWLEDGE and INTELLIGENCE.

Will has vast amounts of knowledge but he doesn't posses the intelligence to do anything new with it other than solving puzzles that other people created.

He can do mathematical problems all day but all he's doing is connecting the dots and just better at it than most people.

But as he says to his cocksleeve he couldn't paint a picture or play the piano because those require physical activities that he doesn't want to do such as being a engineer or scientist that requires actual work where he could be developing new technology but can't because he lacks the originality to do so and doesn't want to get his hands dirty.

This just shows Damon and Affleck's middle-upper-class-trust-fund-baby aversion to physical labor as Will only wants to answer math problems which wouldn't require him to step foot out of a comfy air conditioned office which is a job that he know doubt could easily land anywhere he goes!

Knowledge is being able to answer questions but intelligence is being able to come up with the initial question that no one else thought of.

That's true originality that Will doesn't have!!!FACT!!!
>>
>>215237498
It was a reference to what ww1 soldiers said when they lobbed grenades because the grenades at the time resembled apples. It was supposed to be a flex on how much of a genius Matt Damon is and his knowledge of obscure history but it really just demonstrates how far he has his head up his own ass.
>>
>>215243386
>The original plot was more about government agencies trying to recruit him, more thriller, the only real mentions of this in the finished product is the NSA scene. Someone gave them advice saying it was stupid and the drama of the character was more interesting.
>So it's not like two pseudo intellectuals up their own ass made a drama. It's more like two idiots made a thriller until someone told them it was hacky and they made a drama based on the advice.

That advice came from TERRENCE MALICK who was a friend of Ben Affleck's godfather and met with Damon/Affleck to give pointers on the script and was the one who convinced them to drop the thriller aspect but also that Will should follow Skylar at the end.

Just once again shows that those two never had to struggle for anything, got help every step of the way and reflective of their thoughts about jobs involving physical labor, even those that required math skills such as engineering or science where you have to do more than lift a finger!!!FACT!!!
>>
>>215243386
>The original plot was more about government agencies trying to recruit him, more thriller, the only real mentions of this in the finished product is the NSA scene. Someone gave them advice saying it was stupid and the drama of the character was more interesting.
>So it's not like two pseudo intellectuals up their own ass made a drama. It's more like two idiots made a thriller until someone told them it was hacky and they made a drama based on the advice.

It's appealing to the people who see themselves as Will and making fun of them because they lack the instinct that the bourgeois have to think about the institutions they are attached to or subject to. Thinking about ones reputation like that is a taboo Will has because of his social class. Also seen in the Robin/Stellan(?) dynamic. People thought it was genius for the wrong reasons but it actually is. It's highlighting slave vs master morality

Not at all true. There's a sweet spot for IQ and ambition, around the lawyer/physician range, like 110-120, effectively midwits, really. From the gifted range on up, 130+, the odds of mental illness are orders of magnitude more likely. I've belonged to Mensa for 20 years and went to exactly one meeting as it was the most depressing experience of my life. I thought I'd meet all these interesting people and get to network and shit, and instead I met all these fucking spergs on disability whose interests were chess and sci-fi paperbacks.

I'd be willing to bet most of the people in this thread are smarter than most of the VPs at any fintech company, they just didn't get lucky enough to be born to parents with money.

This isn’t hard math. You can get an education and make all the money in the world, and you’ll never forget the night you went from trying to scoop college pussy to getting punked out in front of a bar full of people by some white trash hoodlum. If he had pushed it, he would have gotten his ass beat which would have made the eternal sting even worse.
The “at least I’ll be original” line was gay but it didn’t matter. The guy was still cucked.
Of course the truth is I’d rather be the college douche over Will and most people would. That wouldn’t change the humiliating memory though. Of course Will looks more embarrassing in the long view but in the college kids mind, his humiliation is paramount.

You only have the brains and obsessiveness thing that might get you the grades for Harvard to look at you, but I assure you you couldn't pass any of the other requirements for "well-rounded individual". You're probably a shut-in incel who identifies as some kind of "neurodivergent".

This. If you put in the time and get your degree (getting easier every year) you can land a job and be terrible at it.
People have told me I'm the smartest guy in the room. But it will never do me any good because I'm fucking lazy. I'd rather lay around reading all day than pursue higher education through the formal channels. I'm not motivated to get a "good" job. I don't mind custodial work or dishwashing. I get stoned and zone out at work and in my many off hours I make art and read books in a tiny guest house I get for $500/month. I feel I have a rich life in a great community.

Happiness and success as concepts are subjective to the individual.

This. I was in the Talented And Gifted program as a child. IQ tested at 130. I clowned on my teachers and excelled in areas that interested me. Cared more about drawing than math and shit. My parents had enough money that I could have gone to college and been somebody, but I liked just drinking and getting high and hanging out with friends. That's still really all I care about as a middle-aged man with no family. Though I wish I had a family. Most women aren't intellectually stimulating. And the ones who are want a "successful" man with good money and a career. The few artsy chicks I love to hang out with wouldn't make good mothers. I guess I could marry a dumb woman and have half-dumb kids, but I just can't bring myself to. I can't be with someone dumb. And only dumb women have any interest in long term type relationships with me. I'm too cantankerous anyway. Smart people see the world as a mess they can't fix and they can never be happy. I read that somewhere and it makes sense. I can't find solace in religion or sports or any such retarded pursuit. Doomed to general unhappiness and "mediocrity" financially. There's definitely some mental illness here somewhere, but I avoid having it checked and diagnosed.
But even if I could snap my fingers and instantly be slightly dumber and yet successful and happy I still wouldn't do it. I don't believe in that kind of thing. This is my life and I'm stuck being me. We all have our own plight. It's our duty to live it out.

Not for nothing but it doesn't take much to realize that these institutions are solely in place, at least in the United States, to funnel money. Schools get more money based on students that graduate. Universities pay schools money to tell students to go to their universities. Students pay to go to university. This isn't a conspiracy, it's just the way things are.
