They're employed by their local communities, not the federal government. So they're not obligated to detain or report people just because they're in the country illegally. Some places do though, it really depends on the local political leanings. Some places will arrest someone for a crime, learn they're an illegal and make a call to ICE. Some places will just proceed on the arrest but wont involve the feds at all. TV shows made mostly by liberals often have the cops say shit like that to make them seem sympathetic

The time for that was 40 years ago. What needs to be done now, for whites to have a chance at remaining the majority is swift, systematic changes. There would need to be a complete shutdown of all immigration indefinitely, preferably forever, along with mass deportations of both legal and illegal immigrants. And no, poor whites are not doing this. This would require a complete overhaul of our government and support from the military. It’s just simply not going to happen. What will happen is a continuation of arguing and policy change, that in all reality doesn’t change much, all the while the white population continues to decline until we are the minority. Then we lose all power, then we become 2nd class citizens, and eventually brown people will probably just kill us once they outnumber us enough. I hope I’m not alive for that last one.

It can be easier if they arrest for something else and can kick the problem to ICE to deport them, though the person may still get a trial anyway. Immigration legality is a civil offense under federal law, while police can only arrest for a criminal offense committed under state law. So cop shows will reflect that, it's a slight true to life instance.What they absolutely are required to report is anything that comes under mandatory reporting requirements, which is generally abuse or illegal acts done to children, the elderly, or mentally incapable.
