Friedkin really went to those insane NYC leather bars and spent hours in them for "research". Cruising is actually a pretty sanitized view of what was going on in that subculture at the time. Paris is Buring is pure fagkino but it's a documentary about the transvestite/trangender scene in 1980s NYC. It focused on the black and hispanic queens who made the competition scene happen. That's where the named Houses, voguing, and tons of other modern queer culture came from.
