If Sauron put a large wooden plank in front of this or 2 guards he would have won. Wtf was Tolkien thinking?
>>

You see a lot of trees in Mordor? You dumb fuck

itt: midwits not understanding the hubris of Sauron
>>
>>215289617
there's "hubris" then there's stupidity. Hubris is leaving Mordor minimally guarded for a time, stupidity is a open entrance to the 1 thing that can kill you
>>

Not a single other being in existence except for a hobbit as humble and good as frodo would've been able to tank the ring's corruption. The idea that anybody would even conceive of destroying the ring instead of trying to use it was beyond him until at last the full extent of his folly was revealed and all his enemy's plans laid bare
right as Gollum got nudged over the edge Eru
>>
>>215289545
There was the largest Army of the Third Age parked in front of it. And also probably lots of guards inside since it was a fortress.

It is the equivalent of Trump ordering every single last person in the Pentagon to immediately go arrest Putin after he gets a text from him with a pic of Putin standing in front of the CNN building in DC with the Epstein files in his hand. Meanwhile a lone Russian saboteur with the lost Nuclear Football sneaks in to remotely launch all America's nukes at Israel, ending the major threat of this age.
>>
>>215291701
>Not a single other being in existence except for a hobbit as humble and good as frodo would've been able to tank the ring's corruption.
But Frodo got corrupted in the end. That's why he put on the ring. Sauron knew this, and that's why he didn't bother with guards.
>>
>>215289545
No one would ever try to sneak in
>>
>>215289545
Sauron is extremely arrogant though, that's part of his character and so what you're pointing out isn't bad writing, it's called characterization. He can't imagine anyone wanting to destroy the ring, he assumes they'd find the power of it impossible to resist. And he's actually correct, because even Frodo succumbs to the ring in the end and decides that he wants to keep it. The ring only gets destroyed by accident, when Gollum tries to claim the ring for himself and falls into the fire.

Arrogant egotistical villains who don’t consider all the possibilities just aren’t very interesting to see defeated. I want to see the heroes succeed because their positive qualities were enough to overcome a competent pragmatic villain, not because the villain has some glaring character flaw other than an ideology/goals in opposition to the heroes’

Aragorn set up this deception in advance when he used the palantir to shit-talk Sauron

Anyone could enter through that tho?
>>
>>215291733
Yeah, way in the end after having it on him for weeks
You see that gollum couldn't even hold onto it for a few minutes before murdering his best friend, that every king and other great power who's even in arms length of it starts getting voices of temptation and darker countenance
Frodo was exceptionally resilient to only fail right at the very end.
>>
>>215291757
>accident

Eru Iluvatar himself reached down and tripped Gollum, it was literally divine intervention, one of the only times it happens in all of Tolkiens works.

As Tolkien put it, Frodo falling to the corruption of the ring wasn't any more a moral failure, or a failure of will, than if he had been crushed by a boulder. It just wasn't something any mortal save maybe Aragorn could have done.

He should have done it but left a convenient Hobbit-sized hole to underline his hubris

Maybe if you told somebody throwing the ring in the fires would power it up

>you get to keep all the lands west of Anduin (basically a fucking status quo, some elves lose land but they were leaving anyway)
>Saruman kicked out of Isengard, Mouth of Sauron gets it

these terms were pretty generous, why did Jewlenskygorn reject them?
>>
Who would even have known you could do that with the ring?

I remind you it took Gandalf YEARS of research to confirm it was the one ring after handling it himself

And only with the council of Elrond, one of the greatest elves ever, did they decide to take it there

Who would even think of it otherwise

Nobody suggested it at the council did they?
>>
>>215289545
He was thinking that Mordor has two highly guarded entrances, it's full of orcs, any human or elf would be found out if trying to sneak through, the vicinity of Mount Doom is inhospitable volcanic desert and the Ring will corrupt anyone holding it not to mention those close to them.

It's like asking why a guy living in a fortress full of guards doesn't lock his bedroom.
>>
>>215289545
>Wtf was Tolkien thinking?
He was thinking there was no other way for Frodo to conceivably get in so he just put an open door there.
>>
Even if he put a door there, couldn't they have just climbed over the top?

>>

Similar to the question of dropping it into the deep ocean or passing the ring onto a being far beyond the rings strength ie. Tom Bombadil. Tolkein answered both

It's a big fucking volcano in the middle of a desolate ash, soaked plain filled with hundreds of thousands of orcs, goblins and other evil creatures. Its not surprising that Sauron thought even getting to the entrance would be virtually impossible.

What's even crazier is that even hurting Shelob was a minor-god tier feat. Sauron with his ring wouldn't have tangoed with Shelob by choice. It was really unfathomable to Sauron that a couple hobbits could just walk into Mordor. Sauron was concerned with others using the ring against him. What actually happened just doesn't make any sense to him.

Because Sauron couldn't wrap his mind around the fact that someone would even think of destroying the Ring instead of using it against him. The thing is, Sauron was right, no one could do it, the corrupting power of the Ring managed to corrupt even Frodo. In the movie, the Ring wasn't thrown in, it fell in after the brief scuffle and in the book, Eru himself intervened.

Eru. Intervened. That is how impossible it was for the Ring to being destroyed by lesser beings wanting to throw the Ring into the volcano. Yet you think that Sauron was retarded somehow even though everything points out to him being correct in his assertion.

Stalin was a bit like sauron in his folly, a complete realist who didnt give a shit about ideology and only saw raw power. In his mind a pact with the self declared "1488 ultra commie eradicators" was a perfectly logical move. Two powers completely outmanouvering all others and dominating europe forever.

Just like sauron his hubris came from not even being able to even imagine the mindset of his opponent Hitler: an ideologue that actually 100% meant every crazy thing he said or wrote. No wonder he spend the first days of the invasion in total disbelief that someone would actually stick to his crazy beliefs and not just doing whatever is convienent.

Actually once you think about it, Stalins retardation (trusting the fucking Nazis) makes perfect sense if Hitler had the same powerhungry mindset as him. And Hitlers retardation (lets invade my one last ally and start a two front war lol) makes perfect sense if Stalin had the exact same crazy ideological mindset as him. Those two fellas just didnt vibe

Sauron is 100% correct. No man can resist the temptation of the ring. That's why an act of Mercy (Frodo sparring Golem) gave God the opportunity to smash it via Deus Ex Machina. Any normal person taking the ring would not have succeeded.
>>
>>215289719
>stupidity is a open entrance to the 1 thing that can kill you
Thats exactly what Sauron was thinking when he realized the ring was in the volcano.
Some things you just dont think about until its too late.
>>
>>215289719
Why? Twice (Isildur & Frodo) someone had taken the ring to the inside of the mountain and twice they failed to throw it into the lava. Once is coincidence, twice is a pattern forming.
>>
>>215289719
Why would he prevent the Ring from coming back to him? He’s not spectating the hobbits like a video game, he’s just sensing it getting closer.

Why didn't Elrond just rush Isildur and tackle them both into the lava? Surely he would not be so selfish that he valued his own life over the good of Middle Earth?
