Did you boomers really go crazy about this show?
>>
>>215299252
Boomer soccer moms tried to get Pokemon cancelled from tv. Boomers hated anything fun kids enjoyed
>>

I'm a millennial so I can't help you

Are zoomers purposely incredulous about everything? Is it some sort of mental illness?

>>
It was a different time, free to air television and cartoons were very rare. $5 card packs to show other kids (recognizable) thing. The star of the show was also white back when there was nothing wrong with that.
You wouldn't understand

Millennial Chad here, yeah, I fucking LOVED watching the Kanto Saga of the Pokemon anime. The Kanto Saga of the Pokemon anime was peak kino and peak comfy. Stopped regularly watching by Johto though as I kinda lost most of my interest in the show by that point. I mean there was still some interest there but it was no longer an obsession.
>>
>>215299252
I didn't even know it was a show until after I played the Game Boy game a lot.

Nintendo Power sent me a VHS that shilled the anime and it had a live action actress play Ash's mom. Then I got mad that the anime was nothing like the game and that Ash and Gary didn't beat up the Elite Four. Then I went to see the movie and Mewtwo wasn't a hideous monster that hid in a cave.

More like they hated anything Japanese due to WWII resentment and Japan dominating the automobile and consumer electronics industry. The way people feel about China now is how boomers felt about Japan in the 80's and 90's.

My dad used to say that video games were invented by the Japanese to make Americans lazy.

People look at China with Red Scare propaganda playing in their mind
Plenty of parents and teachers in the 90's tried to ban Pokemon using a lot of the Satanic Panic shit. I remember my school banned it and part of the note we had to show our parents mentioned summoning beasts to fight for you and they'll only obey if you have the proper relics

second gen i could swallow with a big glass of water but anything beyond that it's shit and didn't bother. also mewtwo has an actual backstory and character development
"birth of mewtwo" was apparently too dark so they cut it out from the original movie. clones getting killed while he's the only survivor with a deep identitiy crisis

Yep Space Invaders was the first vidya from Japan that became globally popular, followed by Pac-Man. But Pokémon was the first Japanese thing to actually become a multimedia phenomenon among kids, which made boomers incensed.
>>215299866
I mean yeah there was some of the moral panic left over from the D&D scare in the 80's, but boomers were also afraid that Japan was going to become so economically powerful that it would start buying whole countries and take over the world. You can see this fear depicted in a lot of 80's movies about the future such as Blade Runner and Back to the Future 2.

I think they hated it because it was banal to anyone with a developed brain but captivating enough for a child to serve as a living, breathing advertisement for all of the products that went along with it. A TV show tied in to video games, trading cards, and a mountain of other products was marketing genius.

It was nothing new at the time. Power Rangers was a bunch of recycled footage from decades ago to sell toys to American children, and it worked right away

But no one says anything about the poojeet AI slop we have today like Cocomelon.

Boomers grew up with Godzilla, but he predated TV, so they never got hooked on it. It was actually really hard for foreigners to watch most of the Godzilla movies prior to the DVD era due to licensing and distribution issues. Pokémon was basically a combination of Godzilla, Hello Kitty, Ultraman, and Dragon Quest, so it was destined to be a hit in Japan. FWIW Dragon Ball was also influenced by Godzilla. Godzilla was the original Japanese pop culture icon, so a lot of what they make is descended from him. iirc the first giant robot "mecha" depicted on film was Moguera in The Mysterians, and the first one on film to be remote controlled by humans/aliens was Mechagodzilla.
>>
>>215299295
everything foreign to the was considered satanic. I remember one newspaper review from the movie 2000 which stated the fire pokemon Moltres was “a creature constantly dripping blood”

Godzilla was a fixture of drive-ins and TV creature feature blocks back in the day, to the point where a couple of them even went direct to TV. Boomer monster magazines were dismissive of Japanese monster films, but the kids that read them ended up flooding their polls of "Favorite movie monster" to put Godzilla on top and that really made them reconsider things by the 70s just as Marvel Comics, Hanna Barbara cartoons and Shogun Warriors started being a thing.
Distribution of Godzilla movies only really became a problem after Godzilla 1985 since Biollante went direct to HBO and video and the rest stayed in Japan until the Roland Emmerich movie came out. But even now, Godzilla in the American normie sphere is still primarily defined by the Showa era.
>>

You're sort of right since the backlash to Pokemon and Harry Potter were what ended the credibility of the Christian conservative movement in America. Prior to that they were flipping their shit over Mortal Kombat and DOOM. Before that it was rock music and Dungeons & Dragons. So you see how after 20+ years of claiming the sky is falling over relatively innocuous pastimes, people stopped caring about what they had to say. That's when homosexuality started to get normalized in the media once people let their guards down.

Mostly the cards were meatspace lootboxes. Of course they went basedfaced for them like Fortnite skins, when the GameBoy was revolutionary handheld console technology, and you could play with/against your friends with pixel dogfights.

>Ash has crossdressed on five different occasions

What kind of weird show is this?
>>
>>215299252
Kanto and the Orange Islands are weirdly memorable. The animation looks really good in standard def 4:3. Also, the jank transliteration and localization attempt adds some interesting flavor to it compared to other shows for the under 10 audience. I'm surprised it continued as long as it did as new games came out. I figured the popularity for the show in particular would've ended after gold/silver and Pokemania in general died around that time in like 2000/ early 2001.
>>
>>215300619

It was an awesome kids show. An adventure in a modern fantasy world with cool fantastical creatures, and constant fun battles.

Boomers were people born in the 1950s. You're thinking more along the lines of Millennials and maybe Gen X.

It was a completely different media environment then. Most people got cartoons from network TV since internet was still mostly dial up and cable was too expensive for most households. Most cartoons were either slapsticks like Looney Tunes, sitcoms like Flintstones or toy commercials like Transformers. Most of the cartoon characters were static and the episodes were fully self contained.

At the time Pokemon was something unique. Ash Ketchum was probably the first exposure lots of people had to a shonen lead. He actually had some character development in regards to his skills as a Pokemon trainer and his goal to be a Pokemon Master served as a sort of myth arc which wasn't seen in kids cartoons at the time. Anime was also really niche and not mainstream. Pokemon was the series that changed all that.

Pokemon's popularity really got the ball rolling on getting more anime dubbed and aired on tv because all the networks wanted to find the next Pokemon. That's why things like Cardcaptor Sakura, Yu-Gi-Oh, Digimon and whatnot all started getting translated after Pokemania. I think the Mewtwo movie was the first time an anime movie got wide theatre release. Before that anime movies tended to be more art house movie affairs that were for mature audiences like Ghost in the Shell or Akira. Pokemon was more family friendly and accessible.

I do remember that there were some moral panicking about Pokemon being bad for kids because they were magical or demonic. Back in the day the moral censors were from the Religious Right and parent groups, but it didn't really take. Harry Potter went through the same thing too. I remember that Harry Potter was viewed as the next big thing after Pokemania started dying down.

That sucks because I'm not afraid to say that the first couple of seasons or so were beautiful. Some jankiness aside (normal for anime), the way the animation looked had this almost dreamlike quality to it, and when you're a kid that fries your brain.

This is a bafflingly stupid false equivalence. Japan is a formal ally and was an avid trade partner back then. The reason boomers hated Pokemon was the reason they hated all entertainment, they were protestant retards that considered anything that distracted you from being a slave as "satanic".

>People look at China with Red Scare propaganda playing in their mind
>propaganda
China is an adversary of the US, and regularly employs bots to spam online spaces, floods markets with cheap shitty goods to lower costs and deflating prices which causes companies to be unable to compete, lowering their prices, firing employees, and decreasing their profit margins. On top of this they use the Belt and Road initiative to hold debt as blackmail over developing countries and some retarded first world countries, and were also directly responsible for the largest pandemic outbreak in the 21st century.

It's not "propaganda" to be wary of China, you stupid fucking cunt.

I think it's definitely worth a watch. The animation and fight choreography are definitely at the series peak. I also think it really captured the essence of what Pokemon Contests were supposed to be - basically talent show / dance performances. The last part of the XY series does the best villain confrontation with Team Flare.

I think it's available in both Netflix and Amazon Prime since the Pokemon company wants to pump up the new Pokemon ZA game which also takes place in the Kalos region.

Boomers were unironically right about things they expected from millennials, and it's what China did to overtake the West

It was the first anime most of us ever saw. You have to understand, the idea of a cartoon with continuity and serious themes was completely unique to us.
We were all used to Tom and Jerry, Looney Tunes, and The Flintstones.
Then this shit came along and it was like crack. Not just the cartoon but a videogame and a card game at the same time. It swept through culture like a tsunami.

It had nothing to do with Japan. It was conservatives thinking it was demonic and caused Satanism and all that other crap. They demanded it be banned to protect the children from worshiping Satan just like they did for Dungeons and Dragons. The Pope had to come out to say that he approved of it, just like similar religious leaders had to say Spongebob wasn't causing the kids to be gay.
Now they just say stuff is demonic and causing kids to be transsexuals and should be banned for that instead alongside porn and stuff. It's amazing how little has changed in this regard.

bro we had shows like swat kats and gargoyles and jonny quest airing at the time, shit wasn't that new. but you're right about the games and all that, that's what made us feel like we were a part of something big. like we could all be ash ourselves on our own adventures

Christ the art direction for this series was coomerkino. I'm glad this is a billion dollar franchise, they deserve it for knowing what red blooded millennial boys wanted.

Correct in a way. PokeMania fell off with Gen 3, though it was still popular.
Pokemon itself fell off with Gen 5, despite what zoomers or coping Poketards will tell you

Still shitting their diapers.

i liked gen 7 a lot i don't get the hate. i get the story was dumb anime slop but there is a lot of good in that gen. hell, just dropping the concept of HM slaves alone makes it way more fun to replay than say gen 6 or 3.

Can't believe people like that handholdy fake feelgood garbage gen.
>>
>>215311309
i don't care what people said ten years ago. i disagreed with them then too. they complained about it being on-rails and handholdy, but i thought that was more true of gen 6 in every way. i also remember people complaining about how easy it was the first day and then a couple days later there were many threads crying about getting stomped by professor kukui.
>>215311370
gen 6 and gen 8 are much more guilty of all of that
>>
>>215311400
So you admit you're a slop consumer that's just a contrarian, got it.
>>
>>215311409
and you admit you have no argument beyond appealing to board consensus and cannot think for yourself. got it.
>>
>>215311427
There's nothing to argue, you like shit. Why would I argue with a shit eater?
>>
>>215311443
i don't think you can argue with anyone, you just parrot popular board opinions and throw around schoolboy insults, praying some anon will agree with you and fight your battle for you.
>>
>>215311501
Even if that were the case, what does it say about you that you fall for it so easily? I post shit, you come running. Shit eater behavior.

Anon, I’m not mad I’m just… disappointed. Soijak replying? REALLY? Come on, you’re better than this. And you wonder why nobody takes you seriously. You can’t have it both ways buddy, you can’t leepic troll but really want people to respect your half assed shit posts
>>215311245
And YOU don’t think you’re getting off scot free. I mean, this entire thing is just beneath you. I mean unironically, where do you think you are? You should expect people to trash things you like for no reason. Don’t you see you’re just giving him what he wants?

From 4th grade halfway through 5th grade, Pokemon was the thing. That summer I could name all 151 Pokemons. But after they released the Gen 2 Pokemons the interest in Pokemon in my year dropped and I don't remember Pokemon even being mentioned after that.
