It was rumoured to be really fucking scary and people liked to talk about the chick's boogers being visible in one scene, that's all I remember.
>>
>>215348303
Extremely divisive movie. Some people hated it, claimed it couldn't make them scared because it gave them motion sickness. I loved it but I was a little kid back then. Maybe I'd feel differently now.
>>
>>215348303
The TV said it really happened, so millions of people believed it really happened.

Things have felt very overwhelming and I tried to stay positive in hoping that it would get better but unfortunately I’ve reached my limit.

Fuck I miss when EVERYONE saw the same movies and talked about them IRL. i never actually saw this flick but I knew what it was about immediately. I remember the marketing for it implied it was real found footage so a lot of people went into it thinking it was a documentary type thing.
Also I worked at Hollywood Video and we had pic related which I did rent and masturbate to.

we're discussing the Blair Witch Project here, a Television & Film
>>
>>215348303
The reaction was more to the hype than to the actual movie, many were simply bored or disappointed. Still it left a mark on pop culture and the period inspired hundreds of copycat films and parodies.
>>
>>215348303
I remember there was actual confusion among people over whether or not the movie was real. Found footage was not commonly known of. Marketing of the sort hadn't been tried before on that scale either, so nobody had ever heard of a movie like this. The ones that saw it either hated it or said it was the scariest thing ever made. The image of the girl crying into the camera was one of the biggest images of the decade and got parodies to hell. It was a fun and interesting time. Today it's just not possible to milk that much intrigue out of people. Media oversaturation means nothing is special anymore. Everyone is in a constant haze of consuming mediocrity with almost no not worth peaks or valleys. Movies used to sweep like memes through the culture and now they're just background noise.
>>
I lived next to the woods connected to my yard, so you put the backlight on at night to see the yard but then it's darkness into the woods. There's also a decent woods across the street. And a small neighborhood. You could say it scared the shit out of me. But it didn't stop me from going into the woods.

The ring was worse. I was scared of the tv in my room, and having my dark windows uncovered. But the tv was small so I knew she wouldn't be able to fit coming out. Downstairs was a big tv. Worse was that down the road my friends and I found an unlived in house, close to the lake, with a well in the backyard. It was covered but I still was afraid of it.

It's funny now. I watch these films and don't get scared and such, I had a great imagination and lived in a small wooded area so it was dark and quiet most of the time, still quite empty during the day, it gets spooky. Now I would kill to get that back, everything feels too noisy.

Transparent simp bait. Dead cold eyes.
For me it's her intro to Full Metal Jacket, she's like ''ooh, so excited for getting into Kubrick, I love smart movies for smart people by smart directors, I already know I'm gonna love this'' and then within 10 minutes she's like ''I don't like how this movie makes me feel :-(''
>>
oddly this film affected me more on a years later re-watch then during a first watch
their irrational behavior is more realistic then not, plus it has implications that they are under the witch's spell (though that's more of a retcon thing)

it has that 'hiking youtube channel-creator goes innawoods and then has his first freaky encounter'-type of feel at the very least
>>
>>215350373
that's part of the clumsy airhead bimbo appeal, blud
>>
>>215348303
People literally thought it was real footage.
>>
>>215348303
Most people initially thought it was scary until they realized it was a movie about two college men taking a girl out into the woods and murdering her using trickery about a witch and documenting all of it on camera.
>>
>>215350530
that makes less sense than an acutal witch being there
>>
>>215350373
Full Metal Jacket is not a good indicator for this. That's one of the movies I have watched people react to the most. It is women in general that cannot handle it. Virtually all of them, except for one posted in this thread (Dawn Marie) could not handle the drill sergeant. They found him unnecessarily mean, they can't understand why he has to be so mean and most of them are constantly asking why he has to be that way and are very put off. It is a uniquely female reaction to him. Almost every male who watches FMJ laughs and appreciates how clever the drill sgt is with his insults. Popcorn in bed (OP girl) really struggled with FMJ.

People were pissing and shitting themselves with fear. An old lady in the back of the cinema fainted, another woman ran out through the middle of the screening screaming. A old black dude in front of me kept shouting "Baw ghawd lawd have mercy deeze woods evil". Another woman began crying when the sound of rocks falling were heard. All my friends that saw it with me never dared going into the woods again. They couldnt even watch home videos anymore without getting PTSD flashbacks. Most scary movie ever made.

i saw this flick at Sundance before it went "viral" (that word wasn't used that way back then)
the producers had hung up Missing Persons posters of the kids in the movie all over the place. you would see them but not think too much about them. then when the movie started you could hear people whispering Wait aren't those the kids from the missing posters??
by the time the lights came on at the end, about half the theater was in tears, very upset
then the actors walked up on stage and everyone was like what the fuuuuuuu
i dont like this movie really but if i could rewatch 1 film for the first time it would be this one
great experience

While I don't disbelieve you, since I know some people who saw it when it came out in theaters who felt similarly, I do also feel like people have a tendency to project their own feelings onto a theater audience unless they are overtly shown otherwise by the audience. I knew people who felt the opposite way as well.

It was a really exciting theater experience. Saw it the Friday it came out in a sold-out theater and the energy in the room was electric. In hindsight, not a great horror movie, but the marketing behind it and collective cultural experience made it a memorable thing to see in the theater. it's a funny paradigm for reactors because unless they start out with a niche, the best properties for them to watch will be used up when they have lower subs and as they grow, they quality of properties they have left declines
by the time they reach a million subs (if they ever do), there is nothing left the majority of their viewers wants to see
>>
The memes were literally true. I saw this in theaters with my dad and multiple left because they were panic attacks.

it's not the same, anon. Even though this movie was objectively huge, it didn't generate discussion at all beyond superfans nerding out over details they included. In the 90s if a huge movie came out, it would dominate public discussion both on TV and in your personal life and then cement itself in a pantheon of classic movies people would talk about years later. Today, even a mega-blockbuster like Avengers, even if it said anything interesting or sparked debate (it doesn't), would never achieve the same impact because there is so much shit coming out everday and your attention is already being demanded by a jillion other things. Just like fortnite isn't the same as pokemania despite generating insane income, a lot of the stuff just isn't replicable.

Yes I have, because these are not interesting or deep insights. Your remark about ''the right groups'' is exactly my point though, back then a big movie would stomp into EVERY space and it would be a normal thing, today it's EXCEPTIONAL if it happens even once in a while, popularity is measured in captive audiences. Adults did not talk about pokemon outside of the fact that their children were obsessed with it at the time. You are simply incorrect and are basing your views on what you personally experienced.
I know what Fortnite is for example, because I played video games and my children have played it, but I do not know any of the big e-celeb names.
You are simply not in the right groups and your personal anecdote doesn't disprove me. Perhaps if you actually sought out other people outside of your family members, you might actually know what the youth are talking about today.

Yeah, when she watched Forrest Gump, she said she really related Jenny and had a past similar to her.

Eh, adults never talk about kids stuff in any other sense than having to cater to their demands for new stuff. Once again, you are wilfully misunderstanding my point in your vain attempts to find something to shit on me about. Kinda sad. This isn't a yes or no issue anon, maybe get off the internet sometimes, the whole point of discussion is to share thoughts, not claw desperately for some discursive weapon to bash your fellow anon with, or at least it is for well-adjusted people. I'm not trying to ''disprove'' you, simply saying what it felt like as someone who actually lived through both time periods.

Anyways, so forget about that pokemon stuff you obviously don't agree with. Tell me, since you claim to be in the know and are allegedly hanging in all the places kids hang out in, what ARE the youth talkin about today? Are you the first parent in the history of the world to know what is ''cool''?

>It was rumoured to be really fucking scary and people liked to talk about the chick's boogers being visible in one scene, that's all I remember.

I was 18 years old when the movie was released. I never saw it in the cinema and only watched it on home video, VHS (because it was 1999). The thing to note about this movie was its early attempt at viral marketing using the internet. As there was a viral website that hooked people in believing that the events of the missing teens were real. By using grainy images, low res video and other 'blog like' updates. A lot of people thought this was a documentary when it hit the cinemas and not a movie. It is also why Book of Shadows goes all meta on the original movie. I didn't find it particularly scary when I saw it. But I suppose it did have its unnerving moments in spots.
>>
It was a better watch if you knew nothing about it, which was easy without social media. I rented the DVD one weekend, an older friend told me to watch the faux-doc they put on it before I watched the movie, made it much scarier because the backstory and lore would fill in the bits where you naturally scare yourself with your imagination.
Helped that it was one of my first horror watches ofc. I remember the general opinion at the time being that Blair Witch wasn't scary at all, although this was a few years after it initially released. A lot of people had the VHS at home though, so it must have gotten some fairly positive reviews.

Do women really?

My buddy had to keep his eyes closed half the film because he felt like he was gonna barf.

Also, the ending was confusing, the usher had to explain it on the way out.

>im not a boomer and im not a zoomer. help me understand how watching someone else watch something is something worth talking about
It's about boomers, or whatever generation's nostalgia is being exercised. The views, and hence money, depends on zoomers expressing awe as they watch what you revered back in the day.

That is all.

Old here, I fell asleep in the theater.
>>
>>215361677
i get that part but why is watching the zoomers expressing awe a thing people would want to watch and express an opinion about?
>>
>>215361750
I suppose because you find something cool, naturally somebody else stumbling across it for the first time would think so, too, and there's joy in that? In an "I envy you" sort of way.

It was also rumored to be true because the film makers were massive faggots and liars. Notice the Fourth Kind tried this too.

>I didn't get to watch it til like a year after it came out but people kept talking about it like this obvious fucking movie was real

Yeah. It was part of the viral marketing campaign that duped a lot pf people into thinking that this was actually 'found footage' of missing teenagers. I wonder if that website is on internet archive? It was still from a time when you could fool audiences with an indie-film stunt like; The Blair Witch.
>>
>>215361885
it just shows how retarded people are, as if you could make a movie out of evidence material from a missing person case
>>
A cute girl puked in the theatre in front of me on opening weekend ftw

It didn't even smell bad

Actually that was The Matrix
