Mortal Kombat 2021 is fucking dogshit, but Mortal Kombat 1995 is not only the best video-game film of all time by the low standards of video-game films but also a genuinely good film in its own right. And its soundtrack is fucking kino. Mortal Kombat 1995 is SOVL and the ending (especially with that Orbital track playing in the background, which is my favorite track of all time) is surprisingly heartfelt for a fucking Mortal Kombat movie (of all things). Happy 30th anniversary to Mortal Kombat 1995, the greatest video-game film of all time.

Damned by faint praise. It's the typical 90's martial arts flick. Just because it has your favorite childhood fightanslop in it doesn't make it special.

Always liked how it managed to lock in legitimately unsettling deaths while still keeping a PG-13 rating. It wasn't as gory as the games, but it made up for it in smart ways. There isn't a single death in this movie that's forgettable.

Like the island they go to is an in-between and that's where they first start to get stronger. The Outerworld maxes this power. It's kinda like Superman with the yellow sub. And it's why suddenly they can do more superhuman attacks.
>>
>>215354801

I've always wanted to visit that Island IRL, its in Tailand or something right?
>>
>>215354801
Yeah I know they get superpowers like in the new one but in the 1995 movie all we see about Johnny Cage is him making a scene in a movie and then he is defeating Scorpio. They should have shown that he was also a martial arts master outside the movies or something.

Liu Khan we see has been trained the monks all his life for that tournament, that's believable.

Another one is Sonya. We only see her making a police raid and then she is good fighting... why exactly?

I know it's a dumb videogame movie and I shouldn't give importance to those details but...
>>
>>215352161
>typical 90's martial arts flick
Not really. Typically 90s martial arts movies were about a scrappy cop with a checkered past taking on terrorists or gangsters with his bare hands, not extradimensional magic fighting tournaments.

>>215354184
>PG-13
People complain about it not getting made with more gore but there's something campier about bloodless deaths.
>>
>>215352308
No, it deserved to be gory and violent with severed heads and spinal columns torn off and flying through the air. That was the whole appeal of the games. The gameplay was much worse than Street Fighter, Samurai Shodown, etc. We only played it for the realistic graphics and violence. The people playing the game didn't want to see this kind of kiddy PG-13 movie.
>>
>>215354859
Wasn't there beach with leo filmed nearby?
>>
Another thing, Kitana is 10,000 years old or something like that, and then she can't defeat Liu Khan?

If she is that old, with all that time to train martial arts and magic... she should be much more powerful than the humans.

More than that it also forced the team to be more creative with making them disturbing. They could've been lazy about it, but they wanted to keep the brutality of death intact, even if they couldn't use as much blood. Shang Tsung decomposing instantly, that one guy getting his soul ripped out of him, Kano getting his neck snapped, most of the deaths left an impression.
>>
>>215351252

That is correct though admittedly it´s mostly because the premise of the original MK game was simple as fuck. All they had to do was accurately depict the characters the fans were already familiar with and use the iconic music theme, which they did, because back then producers weren´t completely retarded.

That said i guess the ´93 Mario Bross movie kind of proves the opposite, that even the simplest of concepts can be adapted terribly wrong. Good lord... i´m reliving it, make it stop. The horror... the horror.

Mortal Kombat (1995) basically copies Enter the Dragon (1973) in its story and structure though.

>If you only knew how much me hate your kind.

Another thing that makes 1995 better than 2021, is how it doesn't fuck around and just gets straight to the point. The entirety of 2021 is basically just an origin story, a setup for another movie that they weren't sure would even happen. 20 minutes into 1995 we already have Scorpion and Sub Zero and people kicking ass.

It's a problem with the entire industry, where you can't just make a singular finished product, everything has to be a setup for the inevitable sequel and franchise and spinoff.
>>
>>215351252
I was disappointed when it came out, funny how every other MK movie is so fucking bad that this is the best
>>
>>215351252
I think the games now suck bc they lost their soul. The story in the newer games in an incoherent clusterfuck of time travel/multiverse shit and the games filled with random IP slop characters.

Also, I think the series focused too much on gore. This movie was PG-13 with little to no blood and it still feels like Mortal Kombat. The over the top fatalities were more fun when it was crappy graphics, but now its just kind of gross. The ridiculous fun aspect of it is what made it great, along with the in universe characters taking themselves and situation seriously.

Back then action movie stars were usually started as stunt doubles and were actually martial artists before transitioning to acting and becoming stars.

That's why for the longest time Cage character arc was imposter syndrome, in that he questioned himself if he was just an actor or could actually put up a fight.

MK movie was originally supposed to be R-rated, but producers wanted to be able to market it to families and kids. It was a savvy move, because those families and their kids turned out in droves; MK was a sleeper hit nobody thought would bank.
