I think it's more that they obsess over generic gay shit like The Beatles or Springsteen rather than the actually interesting artists from their day. A movie about the Barrett-era Pink Floyd, Mothers of Invention-era Frank Zappa, Black Sabbath, or The Who would all be great subjects for a movie, but instead they go for these generic milquetoast fags like Springsteen.
I at least liked the Dylan movie as a film given Dylan is a more interesting personality/artist due to his shitposting/troll sensibilities and the excellent performances of the cast (Chalamet, Fanning, and Norton knocked it out of the park), but Springsteen has such a generic, cliche background and creative process that I'd rather watch paint dry than a movie about him.

Because Chalamet completely captured the essence of Dylan as a man and how he perceives the world, the creative process, and music. He nailed everything down to the mannerisms and attitudes toward women and politics that a lesser actor would've very easily fumbled. That's because, as you stated, the purpose of TC and the movie were about mythologizing, depicting what it was about Dylan that seperated him from normal people and other musicians rather than what made him relatable.

Obviously there were boomer musicians who had a huge impact on the culture like The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan, but the musicians of the 60s weren't the same ones in the 80s, the 60s were a giant shift in culture and politics, many musicians of that era had significance. Majority of the commercial music from the 80s was made purely for profit, no messages, no significance, nothing, but still held in high regard because of nostalgia.

Biopics are pretty much universally dogshit by definition that only serve as a way for the lead actor to show off and to cement a propaganda narrative about the subject in the wider public consciousness.

Amadeus is the only good biopic as it intentionally and explicitly does not follow real history and uses the historical subjects as broad archetypes to tell a larger story.
