The special effects in the movie where a bit lack luster. The greenscreen when he falls out of the elevator comes to mind.Also the explosion from this was literally stolen from The Last Boy Scout.
I have always read the title of this film as "Last-action Hero". Two words, not three, and putting last and action emphasized together rather than action and hero. I have no idea why.

>>215370984I wrote a thesis on this movie. First off, it is not because of Jurassic Park release. Movies could do well along side others in the 90's. Dramas just dominated the box office in 1993. There was a over saturation of special effects event type movies. Mario Bros, Ninja Turtles 3. The problem with the movie, was people didn't understand what it was. It was hard to sell. A movie about Arnold being a movie star? It was an action movie, but a parody? Was it serious, was it silly? What was it? There were a lot of parodies in the 90's. 93 had Hot Shots 2 and Robin Hood Men in Tights. Neither were a big hit either. Though those are both universally well received movies. In the end, Stallone's Cliffhanger was the action movie of the year to break out. It was simple. It didn't have other layers and Critically on Last Action Hero, the film itself doesn't know what it is. It forgets to make the kid the emotional arc of the film and then flips it to making it the fictional Arnold. What happens if he dies in the real world? What even are the stakes there? Couldn't you just, get another one of them from another movie showing? The character of Death appearing was too interesting for the writers to not use, but it ultimately serves no purpose. The concept is of pulling villains from film is an embarrassment of riches that Benedict himself acknowledges. Instead of releasing, say Dracula or the t-1000, for a more surefire victory, Benedict brings back the villain that bested Jack..... but again, it's tying an emotional arc to the fictional character, not the real main character. The movie ends in a bleak way too, after starting and swimming in the fun of a fake LA.. Cause once Jack is in NY, the movie really slows down the action. A simple re-write.... shoot the kid and now Jack has to bring him back into the movie world to save the kid. Do chase sequence and they realize, he's healed. Then the kid has to go home to make sure he is healed for real.

It should have been R-rated. How can the parody of R rated action films not be R rated? The kid was annoying. He should have been someone in their 20s. Arnold's in movie character was actually the most tame role Arnold had in years.
