All the whimsy feels hollow and the constant "ooh's" and "aaahs" from his blank, little girl cardboard cutout of a character feel unearned as a result. Every single Miyazaki film feels like a platitude. On the surface it is perhaps agreeable but nothing beyond that. Where is the libido? Where is the sexual tension that comes from growing up? Where is the battle of th sexes that was so natural in our childhood? Anno fundamentally understood this which is why Evangelion is the greatest anime of all time and unmatched. Shinji and Asuka is the closest thing to the first convincing, fictional love story. In contrast, Miyazaki films feel like a lullaby; comforting and safe, but offer no artistic merit

Like the whole movie is about saving her and he meets lolli mommy and eats her jelly on bread and just never makes the connection. And then at the end finally barely acknowledges it before going back through the door. Just way too little emotional build up there to leave it with a shrug and we can’t even do the “meh Japanese people are like that” shit because of the build up. But otherwise it’s a fantastic film, just odd to fumble the entire emotional arc like that. Severely undermines it and leaves it closer to the bottom of the filmography with howls and ponyo
