Okay so as usual everyone is retarded
The plot of the original TRON movie was that this program called the MCP had become self-aware and started stealing info and remaking the company's big computer system to suit its liking.
Nobody remembers it because this part of the story was delivered poorly. In the real world, it was a rogue computer. In the virtual world it was the big spinning face, Sark was its number one guy, and the blue people were programs.
These are good themes to build on: A virtual world, artificial intelligence, sports as serious business.
So of course the sequel has a bunch of quasi-theological horseshit, and in the end Space Jesus sacrifices himself and the mannequin chick is some special kind of angel, and one of the bad guys was actually a good guy all along. Like, at the climax of the movie, he remembers that he's Tron. It's fucking retarded.
This franchise only had a chance if it stayed on theme.
