It's because of the disconnect of the non-human characters having the most human-like features. Putting that level of detail into their visages and expressions but just slapping it onto the side of a cold metal casing doesn't give the effect of imbuing humanity, it's more of a feeling of having humanity stripped away. Think Robocop.
