R3K was pretty much a Confucian hit piece, Cao Cao was bad because he was a Legalist. Historical Cao Cao was seen as based for much of Chinese history.https://libgen.gl/edition.php?id=141442327
The speech about failure after Red Cliffs in the 2010 series is one of the only ones I find inspiring in media and I watch it after every time I fuck up at my job (which is almost daily at this point)
Baohhhhh
I wish the show came with a map just got up to the point where Liu Bei steals the gains after Red Cliffs but I have no idea where the fuck this is supposed to be, they keep saying Liu Bei is between Sun and Cao Cao, but looking at a map for 209, it doesn't look like Liu Bei is anywhere near Cao Cao.Also who are the rest of these jokers? Liu Zhang? Ma Teng? Shi Xie? Zhang Lu? Are they going to be in the show?
>>215432226Been a while since I watched it, but Liu Zhang, Ma Teng, and Zhang Lu do show up I think
>>215431067>he leveled up
>>215431067>he doesn't play by some bullshit "filial" rulesYes. That's literally all there is to it. He was a pseudo-legalist and because Confucian elites that actually govern and write laws got their fannies flustered they spent like 1000 years seething at this ONE ideology criticizing their enshrined nepo-baby rights. That's Han dynasty in a nutshell too. A Legalist Qin unites China for the first time ever and a Confucian Han usurps it and spends 400 years seething about it while enjoying the unified China that Qin created. Liu Bei wanted that shit back and the novels were written by another Confucian dog that was actually a descendant of Liu Bei's. That's why the novel is so biased and shits out nonexistent war crimes for Cao Cao while trying to gloss over war crimes of Shu and even tries to whitewash TURBO retards like Ma Chao.
People really need to realize that different continents have a completely different foundation than we do. What we perceive as heroism could be perceived as selfishness or even cowardice in asian mythology, and vice versa. This is also (in part) why cultures stemming from different civilizational roots can never truly get along. An irishman and an italian will have plenty of values that they can agree on, even if they differ in nuance. The same cannot be said about a korean and an arab. Common ground is possible, but requires many more compromises and caveats than otherwise.
>>215432226That doesn't sound right, this is the map that comes with my manga (sangokushi) that I usually go with

>>215432621>>215433885Han was originally Daoist, but Confucians kept gifting books to emperors until one emperor made Confucianism the main religion again. Also Cao Cao genocided most of the Xu province because he wanted to steal all their money and rob their ancestor's tombs, and that's why so many people decided to leave with Liu Bei to Shu, because they were afraid Cao Cao would do the same to them.
>>215431067Oh yeah if hes so smart why did he decide to send his army to die in the middle of a swamp in china during red cliffs??

>>215431067I liked the episode where he slaughters his uncle's whole household over a sitcom misunderstanding.
>>215431067>>215432621The real reason is much simpler. Writer was a guy who lived in a Ming dynasty and target audience for the novel were most likely nobles and Ming Emperors court. Writing Cao Cao as the hero of the story would quickly earn him accusations of fostering rebellion against the Emperor and get his waist chopped in half. So he had to keep Cao Cao as the villain despite the fact how much he loves writing Cao Cao as this charismatic and smart conqueror dude who really liked other smart ambitious dudes.

This is the worst TV series that i've enjoyed, i don't think i'll ever be able to hate it or forget it. Despite everything by god: Despite the terrible editing done by an amateur, despite the epileptic battle scenes filmed with a microscope, despite the suffocating repetitive melodrama, despite the reused locations, despite the extras in ill fitting plastic armor obviously not giving a shit on screen, despite the cheapness of it all. When i catch a horse defecating on set and they kept it in. When an actor slips and looks at the camera giggling but they kept rolling. When the actors' lines of sight don't even match between cuts because they had the location for one day and they had to stitch together the one take they had. When the entirety of china's country side is this one road with the trees or that one quary. When i catch the dead bodies on the floor lifting their heads up. Such objective filming mistakes are just earnest charm value. And then the next scene features 50 people on 50 real horses charging with the actual actors on the actual horses waving actual sticks at each other with real bonefires and a battlement made of real wood with 50 real extras standing on the wall in the distance banging on real drums and it kinda looks fucking cool. I'm almost tempted to believe that Yuan Shao's actor actually cut his hand on screen in that war ritual scene because the fake blood they use is of the correct color. It's a very physical piece of tv. There's a closeness to reality that's no longer found in 2025 and boy does this show suck sometimes. We're talking the soundtrack abruptly cutting mid-scene levels of editing mistakes here.

>>215439497Confucian thought externalizes morality and inscribes moral guidelines like "a father loves his son" into external law order, on the contrary christian thought internalizes morality.Because of this, understanding between eastern and western culture is difficult.A christian man (you without a doubt) believes it is right to love his son because he has an intrinsic feeling to do so in front of himself but a confuscian man loves his son because it is the right thing to do in front of society. That doesn't mean the asian doesn't feel love but it means his morals bare down upon him from outside instead of rising from within. Felt the same way about Ishido in Shogun. Everyone shits on him constantly behind his back for being born of low status. Then they all fuck him over at a pivotal moment. I didn't read the book but someone explained to me that he was literally right about everything and Toranaga proceeded to kill the queen woman and her kid so his offer to marry them was protection she rejected out of classism, and her reward was being killed for it. I felt the same thing again when I played Nioh and then read a bit about Tokichiro's historical basis.
Honestly the events of this series all mix together in my memory like a soup.

>>215442016A lot of it is the same shit on repeat to begin with. Liu Bei does battle with Cao Cao, Liu Bei bravely runs away. Liu Bei takes refuge under another warlord, steals some lands, then tries to fight Cao Cao again is a lot of it

>>215439103> culturally ChineseIt was lots of different regional cultures turned into a monolithic "Han" for the purpose of nation-building, 1 single national culture. Lots of Sinophones do not recognize the ChiComs as true "Chinese" - more like skinwalkers using Chinese identity to enslave people. In that sense, they're no different than juice who use idpol to stay in power - just onstage instead from the backstage or the wings.

>>215432621Every dynasty has had a Legalist government system, retard, including the Han Dynasty which continued to use many of the government institutions and systems of the Qin although with more Daoist and Confucian elements. Confucianism and Legalism was never completely at odds; there were plenty of Legalists who were respected by Confucians and their ideas continued to be used in Confucian society.Liu Bei's Shu Han was the most Legalist state out of the Three Kingdoms and was also far more meritocratic than Cao Wei. Records of the Three Kingdoms states that Zhuge Liang implemented strict but fair laws (the main philosophy in Legalism) and a merit-based system for promotion and demotion. Zhuge Liang had many conflicts with the local Shu nobility for restricting their privileges. Zhuge Liang is considered both a Legalist and a Confucian, and he has an excellent reputation. Cao Wei, by contrast, showed far more favor towards members of the Cao and Xiahou clans who were relatives to the Emperor and they also created the Nine-Rank system for deciding official positions, which placed a lot of importance on bloodline.>nonexistent war crimes for Cao CaoHis massacres of civilian populations are well-recorded in the histories. Cao Cao's reputation has been controversial since the very beginning.>war crimes of ShuLike what? There is not a single record of Shu Han massacring civilians or doing other common war crimes. They are by far the most benevolent out of all of the warlords.>the novels were written by another Confucian dog that was actually a descendant of Liu Bei's.Luo Guanzhong had nothing to do with Liu Bei.>Han usurps itHan did not usurp Qin.>enjoying the unified China that Qin created.Qin collapsed after only 15 years. >>215436503>the greatest traitor has always resembled an honest manThis is kind of a cool line. Makes me think about the honorable hero who may have a change of heart if he is asked to do something that goes against his principles, because an honest man is really only honest to himself and his own wants and needs. They are usually incapable of seeing the bigger picture and what it may cost because their honor is more important to them, and they'll fight to keep it.
>>215446974And that's a good thing

so romance of the three kingdoms was probably the basis for legend of the galactic heroes right
>>215431067>Why am I supposed to hate this guy again? You aren't. Most Chinese people love him for his embodiment of the 'ends justify the means' philosophy. He actually meant it, and lived it.

>>215436448condor heroes trilogy is pretty fun. demi gods and semi devils is too but i dont think its on nyaa.
>>215432226Unfortunately since it was so long ago the borders are hard to exactly know and often based to some degree on modern Chinese provinces, especially those in the south. The yellow territory north of Liu Bei on that map was given to him by Sun Quan later since he couldn't really hold it well at the time. So basically most of the territory south of Cao Cao's Xiangyang was in Liu Bei's control and Liu Bei bordered Sun Quan near the confluence of the Han and Yangtze rivers there. That map is inaccurate in placing Cao Cao's southern limit at the Huai when in reality he controlled places like Lu'an and Hefei which were halfway between the Huai and the Yangtze. So basically Cao Cao's realm stretched further south, and Liu Bei's further north, so they did abut for a time, until Sun Quan betrayed Liu Bei and seized all of Jing.
>>215448592There's so many hilarious moments like this. Its the best tv show I've ever seen.

>>215432226Spoilers, and I'm not tagging everything.Liu Zhang will show up during the campaign that kills Pang Tong and recruits Huang Zhong. They pull the same shit as before where everyone wants to hand over the province to Liu Bei because of muh moral character and ideals. Cao Cao runs a campaign against Ma Teng through letters and frozen mud walls. The Sun branch doesn't really appear in the story too much following Liu Bei going nuclear against them for killing Guan Yu. Zhang Lu is a bit of a footnote, iirc Zhuge Liang kvetches at Liu Bei for attacking Sun Quan when the sound plan would be to attack Zhang Lu to secure a path north to conquer Cao Cao
