Mark had the perfect approach to Jokers laugh; it has to be something of a musical instrument to convey the mood that he is in, so there are different laughs for mischief, malice, and such. He more than anything captured an essence of fear in a post-9/11 world and encompassed that fear succinctly in the sense that one person can upend everything we hold dear.Jack's take was sinister; him popping those eyebrows up with the Cheshire cat grin popping out of that makeup is such a trailer moment. There are aspects that make you feel like he's just some crazy uncle in comparison to Heath, but Jack's laughter mixed with his grin is genuinely unnerving. In terms of make-up, for Jack, it was particularly tricky because one of the great ironies of his life and his profession is that he is allergic to spirit gum, which is the baseline ingredient for a majority if not all prosthetic theatrical makeup. By basing it off the colours featured in the comics at the time, it was tricky to get the proper colour of green. They resorted to using a specially developed makeup that was both a paint and a pigment and old-fashioned, flesh-colored foam rubber grease paint was stippled over the silicone layer for all the scenes of the film where he appeared more human. For the scene where he wipes away some of it on his forehead, they soaked the rag in alcohol and because the grease paint couldn't stick to the silicone, the white makeup underneath remained untouched. Despite all this, especially with the proliferation in HD tv's and such, it wasn't completely perfect. The number one thing all makeup artists try to do is hide the seams and particularly around his jaw in the scene in the apartment, the one in the museum and him confronting Batman at the end do you see cracks around his chin.For Heath, prosthetic tech had come a long way. He applied his own make up and got the makeup team to mimic it. Since they were going for their own style, there wasn't all too much from the comics that they had to adhere to and draw from, but the biggest difference was the material used on his face for the scars. The constant licking of his lips was something of an unconscious tick to moisten the piece around his lips and according to Heath, he said he couldn't feel any of it as if he wasn't wearing it at all. The also used Maybelline "Rouge Passion" lipstick for his smile.
