a lot of stuff springs to mind but since OP started with hyperion I'll stick with unfilmable scifi

there's this, Jeff Noon's stuff chiefly Vert and Pollen, and plenty of Iain M. Banks for narrative reasons but for the sake of brevity Use of Weapons would be the really unshootable one if for no other reason than that chair

>>
>>215443275
If Haneke can write + direct White Ribbon all by himself, adapting novels is just lazy shortcut. Someone years ago had a full complete idea so good a director or writer couldn't come up with, then they butcher or condense it. Why bother? Adapting just for the sake of it. They have no strong desire to say sth about the world they observe/understand, and not just through the daily news EVERYONE is already FORCED TO WATCH or discuss.

As I understood it, in the future, the AI finished making a god, and humanity gave rise to a god in three parts. AI god wanted to kill the human god, but one third of it, the empathy part, had fucked off back in time, so the AI god couldn't kill the human god because god time shit. AI god thought "empathy is when you feel sad about other people suffering or something, right?" So AI god thought it could make the empathy come back if made a shit ton of people suffer, and made a bunch of Shrikes to enact it's plan, though only one got to go back because of honorable combat or something.
The Shrikes job was to draw empathy out of hiding by putting people into a pain simulation and generally menace Hyperion until all those disasters that needed to happen, happened.
TL;DR: Shrike's job was to make people suffer until god decided to do something about it, so other god could kill him. I think.

There are like 3 female character in the book.
Galaxy Leader whose plot point is making an unwomanly decision not based on compassion to "save" the galaxy, and facing the consequences
Detective babe from Schwarzelegger high gravity world whose plot point is is being pregnant and longing for the guy who got her pregnant
Soldier (not) Virgin Mary from [SPOILER] searching Commando's dick

First two are quite decent, the third one is a plot device.

I won't say that it doesn't qualify as sci fi, because it does, but it's more in a hybrid genre way, more inerested in things that could be told in a fantasy book as well. But that's the problem with depicting the far far future.
Asimov does it better, and so does Stanislaw Lem. Or Verne.
Dick is... interesting, but never hits the spot imo.

A lot of books for teens and horror in general are very hard to put on screen for a 2 reasons
When you are writing about magical world of wonders that fill young brains imagination, it's too abstract to put it on the screen. It would look either goofy or bland.
Money. So you use money to make money. You spend budget on CGI and expect fans of the original work to bring buck, but in reality the public is just not there.
Adam Nevill probably the only horror writer with good movie adaptations and still his best works (Number 16) was not adapted, why? Because it would not work. They have to change half of the original script for the Ritual and for the No one gets out alive.
Clive Barker wrote a lot of horror books and those which were adapted to movies are the most bland and unsexy

How much of a rundown are you looking for? The series is enormous in scope and worldbuilding. First trilogy directly mirrors the First Crusade, but with rape orcs, sorcery, and misery not only for the main characters, but for pretty much everyone in-universe. Once you clue in that the different nations have more or less direct historical Earth analogues, it all becomes much easier to keep track of.

you ever watched Sucker Punch? where at a surface level, it's about girls in a mental asylum who retreat into a shared roleplaying world to cope with reality?

It's a bit like that, except it's not a coping mechanism or a fake reality. As the characters' point of view & understanding of their world broadens throughout the story, it retroactively re-shapes the world you were reading about earlier in the story, and moving forward.
There's a lot of foreshadowing of what some of it is about right from the opening and all throughout, but it's less so about any big reveal and more about experiencing a world coming to life many times over as your own understanding grows

btw it has a fan-made lexicon/dictionary/glossary that is approved by the author himself. (I think maybe it used to be a fan-wiki type project, the lexicon?)

I disagree.
No need to adapt the overencompassing story: I think The Navidson record itself and the expeditions do lend themselves well to being adapted.
I think a lot of it is the technical limitations and difficulties of having so much of it take place in nearly pitch black visibility

The first book will never happen. It's too hard sci-fi. If it ever happens they'll make it like the video game. It has the characters and aliens from the sequels but pretends the first encounter with rama never happened.

The Rama series is so bizarre. The first book is hard sci-fi and very famous but the sequels ditch all the hard sci-fi and turn it into a soap opera in space. Plus pedophilia. Which is odd since arthur C Clark is the one who gets accused of being a pedo and not the author of the sequels who put literal pedophilia in the books.

You have to kill a degenerated bloodline of demigod rulers to become the new lord and bring back the sacred order or destroy it depending on the ending you choose.
