fucked this up by portraying jack as a weirdo from the beginning
it's supposed to be a story of a nice dad with an angry streak transforming into a lunatic
>>

To be fair that's a lot harder to convey in a film with limited time constraints compared to a novel. Kubrick also wanted to subtly imply sexual abuse going on between the father and son that wasn't really a part of the original story.

Kubrick was like that

that was just Nicholson being himself, and I agree that casting a different, more conventional, actor would have probably worked better for Jack Torrance, same with Wendy. I consider both Nicholson and Duvall to be "stunt casting" and it did detract from the movie

anyone else's favorite scene the job interview? i always love watching the shining, especially this time of year, but i'm never as eager for the real horror scenes as i am for jack sitting down with those two guys in that office. there's just something about it, i don't know.

almost all of kubricks movies have comedic elements.

It looped back around to being unsettling psychological horror for me when the tennis ball turned pink.

It is amusing how most people watch it to cheer on Jack wanting to kill his family.
Everyone picks up on the fact that Jack is already annoyed by his family on the drive up.
Even my dad loved the film, uh, for that reason. Though we saw the cut to bits version on VHS.
I never knew the alcoholism subplot until many years later.

I think I get it, it's comfy, he's confident and charming and they're friendly. It has the feeling of an older film and doesn't seem super realistic but it clicks. Maybe I'm rambling.

This movie taught me to always have a season's worth of booze stockpiled. He would've been fine if he was wasted with this typewriter 24/7 and was never near his family.
>>
>guy annoyed with his family gets isolated with his family in a haunted location

wow what could possibly go wrong
>>
So there was nothing paranormal going on and Jack was just going schizo, right?
Also his son inherited his schizophrenia and was also going a bit loopy (but not as much as his dad).
>>
>>215451486
Why the hell did they recreate that office for someplace totally different in Doctor Sleep?

The Shining and Twin Peaks take place in the same universe

Kubrick had this conversation with Spielberg and my man Stan just likes things to be weird and over the top. Also, fuck the book, it's not that great.
>>

Kubrick pretty much made the movie into a reflection of King himself and that's why King hated it, and even now can't admit why it bothered him.

Also has the only scene in the movie where Jack doesn't hate his wife
>>

Indeed, and the 'extended' scene with Lloyd, including the part where Jack takes a drink and looks possessed, and is thereby doomed by the spirits.
>Why did Kubrick do this? Is he stupid?

Movie made me realise I'd easily fall in love with a below-mid looking woman if she is nice.
>>
>>215451486
Yeah it's kino. They don't act like normal human beings so it's easy going and unnerving at the same time. Pretty much a trademark of Kubrick's but that scene is a perfect yet subtle example of it.
>>
>>215451486
>>215454828
I'd heard that Kubrick had cut a scene at the end where they are at hospital and Ullman rolls a ball to Danny, suggesting that he was in on it too.

>>215454756
Same. Sadly, they are all Chad-only now as well.

Alcoholism is very personal for Stephen King

I think it's better than the book.

King is great at ideas but you need a Director with a really strong vision to translate his work otherwise it will be schlock.

Remember that the novel has hedge animals and firehoses attacking people. Everything about King's work is overt while Kubrick focuses on making it more psychological with the hotel working on Jack's mental state.

King hates it because Jack was his self-insert who find redemption in the novel by destroying the hotel while Kubrick's version succumbs to the influences of it while dying in a literal maze that's a metaphorical representation of his descent into insanity!!!FACT!!!

Kind reminds of of a kid I knew who's brother would always whistle Pumped Up Kicks and they were homeschooled!!!FACT!!!
