The detective was a sympathetic character but he represents Christianity's blind spots in reaching people in the modern world. Spots that paganism fills in easily.

Up until his very end it's hard to say if he accepts his martyr's death as his last words are "damn you!" He's still indignant and outraged.

The "not even horror" type of eeriness, that you don't get, is what makes it unique. It's a cult movie for a very good reason.

The movie starts being light-hearted and goofy and continues to be goofy right until the very end. Even when the character is in great danger, it acts like it's a looney tunes type comedy.

It pulls a fast one on you, with great shock value, because it switches genres mid-film. That's why you DO NOT see what's coming, because it shapes your expectations on a meta level. You don't think a horrible ending is possible, because it's not that kind of a movie. And then the horrible ending comes.
