Still the best movie of the decade.

It was exceptional but Banshees of Inisherin my personal choice for that. Tar probably second.

Between One Battle After Another and Bugonia, previously good directors are really fucking up badly this year.

What do you "get" ffom this movie?
What was I supposed to be interested about?
I wasn't invested in her day to day life, I wasn't interested in the cinematography, the visuals, the score, anything.
I guess you're supposed to be amazed by the acting?
>Dude let's watch 2h of this actress pretending to be someone else
Ok? What about it? Sasha baren cohen did it in a vastly superior way and I don't think any of his movies are masterpieces
Her acting is comendable, but so what of it? It's her fucking job
>>
>>215460721
How is this a movie for women? The one I watched it with was bored and didn't like it even though I loved it.

It's got one great scene where she dismantles that woke student on reducing composers to their innate qualities instead of judging them on their music. Which is weird because she does the same thing to that chick that works for her.

Besides that the movie doesn't hold my interest and I haven't finished a second watch.

She basically does just that. She says herself as a lesbian she isn't fond of Beethoven, a hetero male, if you reduce him to just those qualities. It's when you're actually faced with the music he wrote that you recognize how incredible he was. Again, one good scene, movie sucks and if I have to read about how it's a "masterclass in acting" one more time I'm going to an hero some critics
>>

I think this is a case of one of these movies that you can admire the thecnical aspects off of it but it just isn't fun.
Examples: "Hardcore henry" and "Synecdoche, New York"
Anybody who likes cinema should just take a look once. And admire the clever ideas, the "work arounds" the interesting concepts. But I'll never watch it again.
>>
>>215463594
>movie sucks
I agree with you on that. It felt like it didn't have the balls to commit to whatever message or themes it was going for.
>The hints at ghosts
>Tar calling herself a "father"
>Tar turning out to be from New Jersey
>>
>>215463006
>its got one good scene where the story reinforces my biases
>the parts that don't? shit
>>
I like it. It's just a solid character study with strong acting and directing. Not sure why people would find it confusing or have strong opinions in one way or the other.
>>
>>215460623
doesnt she have a sound sensitivity? i've got a bad one. i should watch it
>>
>>215463951
I didn't mention anything of biases regarding the rest of the movie because there are none. It simply didn't hold my interest outside of a single scene.

>>215460623

what did she mean by that?
>>
>>215463508
She traveled to the Philippines because she couldn't get a job in a civilized nation and the indigenous community style made her physically ill when she went to that rub and tug.
>>
>>215463864
Why are you digging for a message here?
Its a riches to rags film about a fictional person.
One that grew up poor and uncultured, but forcefully built herself a new identity based on appearing strong and in-charge. She was also willing to use her power against others, including wielding it to seduce those she was sexually interested in. Her identity was built around getting power and then using that power to get what she wanted.
Eventually this explodes on her and the carefully curated identity she built breaks and she's left at the bottom of the world.
There's also a metanarrative about no one giving a shit about classical music and she's the queen of an ant hill.

There's nothing complex there thematically, because the film is just a canvas for the actors and director.
>>
>>215464190
>There's also a metanarrative about no one giving a shit about classical music
Call me retarded, but I completely missed that part. I watched this movie sober, too.

>>
I wonder what Capcom thought when they were asked to feature Monster Hunter at the end.
>>
>>215464316
Are you saying people irl don't care about classical music, or that the movie was implying it? Neither seem true
>>
>>215464272
>>215464316
Maybe I should rewatch this film.
>>
>>215464405
The film was implying it directly there.
Her neighbors and landlord found her best in class playing (something that in her world of classical music would sell expensive tickets) to be an annoyance to work around when doing room tours for tenants. The same as if she was any other annoying, noisy tenant.
The idea that she was just a big fish in a tiny pond was a definite point the film was making.

Look at the end of the film.
She was doing scut work conducting video game OSTs to a crowd of people that didn't give a shit that she was on a metronome. And yet that drew a larger and more enthusiastic crowd than anything else we see in the film.
No one gives a shit about classical music, but she built and then ruined her life around it.
>>
>>215464561
NTA, but similar theme in Whiplash, no?
>>
>>215464597
Its touched on there, too.
But for Tar is much more of a kick in the teeth for the protagonist than it is in Whiplash.
>>
>>215464158
Didn't care for the movie but wish I could take a whiff of her hairy snatch
>>
>>215464181
>and the indigenous community style made her physically ill
i'm gonna assume you're not joking and you're just retarded. She became physically ill because she realized she's a sexual predator
>>
>>215464597
Whiplash briefly alludes to it with this scene https://youtu.be/RSDmo-gJ8XY?si=qGExbbDOPQ2L8YNL

The problem is that Damien Chazelle is a bad writer and frames it like Fletcher is just a seething chud because all his family cares about is hecking sportsball as opposed to his far superior highbrow jazz musicianship. They ask perfectly reasonable questions and take an interest in his hobby (How is music a competition, isn't it subjective?) and express earnest happiness for him, then he spergs out anyways because he's not the center of attention.

Midwits are obsessed with sociocultural analysis through the lens of watered-down psychology and the ideal of atheism. They consider aesthetically sterilized movies about the mundane to be high brow, spiting sound order and also whimsy.

Always wonder about you religious people. see, here in my neighborhood, There is a group of people who walk around with a Bible beneath the arms at all times. dedicating 24/7 to their religion. And I always think: we go to the same shitty situations. The same shitty traffic, the same expensive bills, loud neighbours, same hatred, same horniness, same headaches, same desires. There's nothing about your life that's even a little bit better than mine. Then what makes you cope with your religious endocrination? All you have is a vacant promise of an after life. But it is also promised to me, so?? You clearly just wasting your time.
>>

NTA and haven't even seen the movie, but from what I gather it's a cynical character study. So maybe you should've told anon that instead of doing the >filtered routine.

Religion comes from Religio which roughly means binding. It's about a holistic worldview and no, THE afterlife isn't promised to you.

He's a faggot. La La Land is an entertaining enough flick, but his conception of art and artists is so mind numbingly stupid and privileged.

Look at the way Mia and Seb fight over dinner https://youtu.be/gW0xteHHXrY?t=146 which comes after Mia sees Seb performing crappy music with John Legend. Mia is assblasted because Seb is "selling out" and not being true to his passion or whatever, and we are somehow supposed to believe that this is a reasonable reaction from her. First of all, it's insane that Mia and Seb could date as long as they are and Mia somehow never sees or understands the nature of Seb's work until they've completely choreographed and staged their show - she is portrayed as legitimately scandalized when she sees it for the first time. They never once talked about this, the literal thing he does for a living? Okay. More to the point, it's fucking retarded for a grown ass woman to be holding onto these childish ideas about dreams - Seb was able to get a job adjacent to his passion and get paid good money to consistently work in it, and this is supposed to be seen as bad because he's... giving up on his dreams, I guess? Even though he literally doesn't give up, he just takes a few years to raise the money and THEN opens his jazz club as we see at the end of the film.

Fuck this shallow Hollywood bullshit. Watch pic related for an actual heartbreaking musical about the formation and dissolution of a relationship.
>>
>>215468686
did you see babylon? he ripped off boogie nights and singin' in the rain to an insane degree. i hope someone punches him in the stomach he's such a fucking hack. every movie is just 'i wish i was a jazz musician'
>>
>>215468912
That shit looked terrible. I'll definitely check it out someday, but I am so uninterested in a movie about the magic of making movies from a guy who has never once been able to communicate why he's so fixated on fucking jazz music despite proclaiming his love for it constantly.
