For me? It's The Beast from the East. Honorable mention for Werewolf of Fever Swamp. I preferred Animorphs though. I just finished the summer camp one where the twist at the end is that they are on an alien planet training to go to earth and I might vaguely remember reading the book and rejecting the ending because it was too surreal to even comprehend.

But I could swear there was another summer camp goosebumps where the kids are competing against eachother constantly to get filtered and fed to a monster somewhere.

He might be thinking of Welcome to Dead House, the first one in the series, the family's dog is turned into a zombie by the undead townspeople. After they apparently wipe out all the undead, they leave the house, but the protagonist thinks she sees the undead realtor that sold them the house there at the house selling it to another family as they drive away. In the TV episode, instead of this they retrieve their dog who was missing, and when driving away from the town the dog is revealed to be undead and they have to leave it behind, he might be conflating both of those together.

Goosebumps never scared me as a kid, but The Nightmare Room had one episode that scared the fuck out of me
basically Shia Labeouf finds an old doll when going through his old toys and he talks about how he outgrew it, it then comes to life and tries to kill his real friends then turns him into a doll. His mom finds out in old home videos when he got the doll at his birthday party and evil magician brought it to life
>>
>>215471562
Welcome to Dead House was the only Goosebumps book that actually scared me as a kid. A real draw-in

Yeah I'm not saying the invisibility mirror is the Goosebumps mascot. Slappy is iconic. That book wasn't as good though.

>>215471798
werewolf of fever swamp and beast from the east were not only the best covers but also the best stories
>>
>>215471636
It being the first book written meant it was somewhat longer than the average book (after the first ten or so it shifted from an average of 130 or more pages to 120 or less, that doesn't sound like a lot but in a short book it's a decent percentage) with a bit more time dedicated to building up some creepy atmosphere, and it's also a bit more gruesome in spots since the general tone of the series wasn't quite nailed down, it was a bit wackier by later on.
>>
>>215471852
I only went once. It was karate camp. I was like 10. It was okay. Mostly nobody gave a shit about the karate, some kids got leeches from the lake, scary stories staying up until 2am at the campfire. I wasn't there for like 2 months though, it was just a weekend. If it went on and on I'm sure I would have hated it.

Correct on the first one, it's a good entry. Beast from the East is not really a horror story, more of a fantasy adventure, but that's probably why I reread it a lot, it was different.

I feel like I would have got bullied at camp because I was so quiet as a kid. They probably would have drowned me in the lake because I couldn't swim. They would have made a camp spooky story about me called the legend of the drowny downy

I remember reading and watching my fair share of Goosebumps but nothing really distinct and vivid has stayed in my mind besides a short part of an episode. I could not remember the context but it was the kidnapped kid with the creepy old dude, this thread reminded me it had werewolves so it must be Werewolf of Fever Swamp. The exact thing was the kid talking about his parent's guns, specifically the "elephant gun". This stuck in mind because I was so fucking confused as to what that was a kid and had no internet to look it up on so I had to manually piece together info from my grandparent's book collection.

Also the book with the cover of the executioner coming down the tower stairs because I remember reading that in the hospital when I'd visit my one grandfather while he was in the hospital and he just did not give a single fuck that I was trying to get some kind of connection with him before he died. Got pissed and never finished the book.

They did in burgerland. They were predicting a snowstorm on my area as a kid and my mom got me telling me to save it for the snowstorm while school was closed.

Comfy reading it while snowing outside staying home from school.

I've been listening to the audio book versions on Audible, by summer 2026 all of the 62 original books should be available. Been having a blast, my thoughts so far:
1 in 4 books are absolute bangers
1 in 4 books are absolute trash
the remaining half is decent but forgettable

I got that tin set with the reprints about two years ago. Sadly they don't have the embossed logos but they do have the original logo and original cover art (what the FUCK were they thinking with the new logo and cover arts).

As for the quality of the stories [spoilers]they surprisngly held up really well. Plus they are early stories so more soul was out into them[/spoiler]

I bought this book at a book fair because the cover was cool, it was holographic. I really hated choose your own adventure books because I was a fast reader and constantly flipping through pages was annoying. The story itself was fine, it was about kids who are on vacation in Vegas and they come across a real mummy. I think it follows them around, and the endings are when the mummy gets the kids.

No. It's basically a place for parents to shove kids for a few weeks so they don't have to deal with them. Unless you enjoy hiking or swimming in ice cold lake water, camp sucks. Probably the worst thing about it is everything involves handholding, you're never allowed to just enjoy the woods on your own terms.
