How comes pirates have never never reached the popularity of samurai, cowboys and mobsters in movies? Any good pirate kino?
Because they're the bad guys
seems gay
In my opinion it’s because the most popular film about pirates is a kids movie, (Pirates of the Caribbean). Meanwhile the others you listed became popular from a mature take on their genre, Samurai (Seven Samurai), Cowboys (too many to list), Mobsters (Godfather). If someone came along with a great mature take on pirates, maybe it would inspire a lot of other people to make films in that setting.

because film makers and studios hate shooting ocean movies
It's mainly because it's rather expensive to film a pirate movie without making it look like shit. Unless you want the whole movie set in the cabin or some shit, not showing the water is always gonna be noticeable.
I think it must has something to do with the fact that a large part of these movies is supposed to take place solely on a boat at sea, which is seen both as too limiting and as a costly nightmare to shoot. That said I remember Cutthroat Island as some peak 90's pirate flick. I haven't see it in ages though.
probably too expensive to film. so the only option is animation, or CGI these days.
>>215477685Filming on ships/17th century sets and pirate costuming is exceedingly more cost inefficient. On top of that they put a lot more camp in pirate productions.
>>215477685i love pirates but thats an easy question, you can never see a samurai as gay, a cowboy as gay or a mobster as gay, but a pirate yeah theyre kinda gay
>>215477685To film a movie with each you'll need the following:>samuraiA vaguely asian-looking dude with a sword somewhere near a forest area>cowboysA man and a horse in a desert>mobstersSome wiseguys in suits with guns in a city>piratesA wooden ship that's suitably large and in good enough condition to float, or otherwise you'll need all the equipment required to fake such a ship
A fat guy seeding and torrenting on his computer as glowies try to cradk his seven proxies would be a boring two hours.
>>215477685It's harder to do sets and effects for boats.
>>215477685>samurainobody cares about some greasy slant with a sword that bends if you hit anything harder than skin
>>215478006Cutthroat Island is horrible, it singlehandedly ended Geena Davis' movie career
>>215477685Treasure Island (1950) the first fully live action Disney movie
pirates of the caribbean is more popular than any mobster, cowboy, or samurai movie
>>215477685Filming at sea and with large sets involving lots of water and big old boats can be really expensive like with Titanic or Water World. Also Cuttthroat Island bombed hard so it scared producers away from pirates for a while
>>215479408
>>215479469Thats one franchise though. There are no other big pirate movies at all
>>215477685Because the vast majority of sea fairing is mind numbing tedium.
it's not that expensive to make a boat movieJames Cameron got fox to build him a giant lagoon in Mexico that they also filmed master and commander on
pirates
>>215479553>it's not that expensive, just build a lagoon
>>215478006>>215479416I still like this movie but I have to admit it’s actually terrible
>>215479580they already built the lagoon
this one is cool and incredibly underrated
for me it's Pirates 2: Stagnetti's Revenge
did someone say pirate kino?
Black Sails was onto something before they fucked it up
Were you in the internet in the 2000s? Millenials fucking loved talk like a pirate day almost as much as they loved zombies
>>215479469They don’t have the Billy Batts Shiny Car Ride at Disney World
>>215477685There's a whole genre called swashbuckler.
>>215477685>piratesEvery time I see this word the first thing I think of is that porn movie
Which pirate movie inspired Lego to produce these?
Ass pirates
Some samurai were prolific sailors, is there not a single movie about sailing samurai?Or cowboys at sea?
