This happens right after Jane's character sacrifices his kid and two other people, to avoid the worse of being caught by the creatures. The book's ending is different. There's no salvation and they hear something in the radio and proceed to go in that direction to seek shelter. I prefer the book's, but the movie is way more memorable.
