yeah King likes to use a lot of those images over and over - but those are strictly part of his own narrative.

In the world of film and television there is a different mandate and we will always see terms like the number 42, and 'a storm is coming' again and again.

In the book, the walkers have to maintain a speed of 4 mph, but in the movie at the request of Stephen King, they changed it to 3 mph as he felt the original speed was unrealistic for the duration of the contest.

no way the white guy was winning. the only question was what the black guy would do when he won. in the end he did the obvious cathartic thing
>>
>>215498636
The white guy wins in the book. I think I would've liked the black guy to run to his death afterwards or something. I thought it was grim that he spent so long trying to convince the white guy to give up such a vengeful wish, only to do it himself though.

the premise is interesting enough but it makes zero fucking sense, why would anybody sign up for this shit when they have a 1/50 chance of winning? even more bizarre, they say that every single man signs up for this, what the fuck for? just because they're living in poverty? it makes zero sense and it would never happen. if they wanted the movie not to be nonsensical then they should have added stronger motivations for doing this shit. if you're that desperate for money wouldn't you rather sell a kidney, instead of signing up to a death race with a 2% chance of living and becoming rich?

I enjoyed the gimmick of the walk itself, but the movie itself is retarded nonsense, if you want the movie to be emotional and have weight then you need to actually make the scenario somewhat believable

The standard of living and state of the world is not clearly shown in the movie. You don't know what you'd do if you were truly desperate.

The more unbelievable part was regular people being able to walk for 5 days straight without stopping, especially the lead character who was a bit chubby. The only somewhat feasible people are the skinny black guys.

I wish 98% of hoodrats would die every day lmao, you don't realize how stupidly high this rate is. This premise is absurdly unrealistic if the players are not forced to play the game, them being volunteers just doesn't make sense. I could buy it if they were depicted as Auschwitz tier desperate, but not in the quiet world they seem to live in.
>>
>>215500130
You're retarded, hordes of people even today are desperate or stupid enough to sign up for this. 50k people die by suicide in US every year, I'd guess a huge percentage of that from living in destitute conditions and drowning in debt, all these people would at least take an unlikely shot in the walk. Moreover, the movie implies that all boys sign up for participation because they're most likely pressured into it culturally, kind of like a proof of manliness.

>not a single dude tests his luck beforehand joining the walk to see if he can manage to do it
Do what? There's no finish line. I imagine every walk ends after a different distance. And because it's so extreme, anyone who does it will almost certainly wreck themselves significantly, if not permanently, making it impossible to train for several months afterwards. And at that point they'd be worse off than before.
They were all young men and they (almost) all seemed pretty capable of walking at 3mph for more than 24 hours straight which is already a fucking feat. It seems like they were mostly all as prepared as they could be.

>I thought it was grim that he spent so long trying to convince the white guy to give up such a vengeful wish, only to do it himself though.
That's why I hated it but also loved it. If it came from Ray then it would feel like he hadn't learned anything and he'd still be letting down his mother. Coming from Pete, you saw how much he had been affected. He no longer wanted that better world because he had been hurt so badly he only wanted revenge.
>>215498729
>have the whole backstory be made up, and the friendship a strategy
Then they couldn't have done the moment where he tried to give up and let Ray win which it made it so much more bittersweet.

>>215504987
People are really showing how myopic they are. After all, this is an allegory for conscription and military, and going to war, and all that. in my opinion at least. It’s only voluntary in so far as there is incredible societal pressure to sign up for the walk. While there have been drafts and that is certainly not voluntary. Their have been situations in our past where young men are shamed because they are not in the fight. In fact, I bet that is informed by the time period given that a lot of young men were shamed for not going to Vietnam and going to college instead, and those guys rebelled against those ideas and became hippies.

You couldn't do it without being incredibly sexist or painfully boring.
The story is brilliant because of the way they all come together. Most of them don't like each other but there's a shared desire to not see anyone else die. And that only works because men are more stoic and closed off than women.
You do the exact same story with women and it doesn't seem anything special because we're used to seeing women in story value companionship and a joint struggle against the odds. And because we're so used to it, it seems so much more unrealistic because we never see it in real life.
>tldr; this scenario wouldn't be evoking any new character interactions by the women, thus losing the pin of what made the story interesting. And it would feel preachy and cliched.

The sickly feeling of having diarrhea when you're out and about is already torture, so having to blast ass constantly with a likely chafed asshole in a death game just feels so painfully unfair and cruel. imagine, if you will, a group of hicks setting up some big panels of aluminum as mirrors and reflecting sunlight onto the road all day before the walkers arrive to super heat it.

the resulting stretch of road becomes the site of the next heat exhaustion.

When he points the gun at him the Major says "He's not going to do it, he's just become rich" or something along those lines and is like "Come on son, it's not too late"

It was pure hubris, he couldn't fathom the idea that the winner would throw it all away to shoot him when all the other winners previously have just taken their prize and left.

>I thought it was grim that he spent so long trying to convince the white guy to give up such a vengeful wish, only to do it himself though

The black guy made it clear through the course of the movie that all he wanted was a family and somebody to call a brother, he found that in the white guy. That's literally why he kept helping the others out and basically dragged the main white guy to the end.

It's also why he tried to sacrifice himself at the end. He already got his wish and was hoping the white guy would win and wish for something other than the gun so he could have his revenge.

When the white guy flipped that around and forced him to win instead, he had nothing left, that's why he stands there not saying anything while the Major is like "What do you want for your wish?", he doesn't have an answer.

I know the book is a bit different but I thought that the whole point of the movie was that the black guy never intended to win in the first place, he was there to help a "brother" finish.

Emotionally effective but, fuck did they fumble the ending.
Throughout the whole movie I never got the sense that McVries was ever suffering from exhaustion.
And you never got the proper build up of The Crowd or just how fucking nuts they were going in the book.
I don't know why they couldn't go with the original ending, if they had effectively featured Stebbins.
>>
here's my take on the film and its lottery system.

the lottery is a farce. In reality every boy in the country signs up, but the boys who are selected are determined through the analysis of state intelligence and secret police to be highly likely to develop into enemies of the state.

Social outcasts. Trouble makers. Fight starters. The Journalist. People with concealed illnesses. People who want to change the world. People who hate the cops. The Child of one of the majors former victims and the bastard off spring of the major - all threats to the state in their own way and in their own time.

The major is the head of the state, regardless of his rank - the way everyone called Gaddafi "Col Gaddafi". So he simply sets up a death march every year with 49 people who would have ended up enemies of the state being liquidated and one being essentially so hobbled and enriched by the whole affair as to most likely abandon the idea of changing the system having survived the worst ordeal it has.
>>
>>215510906

If I was doing the long walk. I would wear sketchers shoes with a composite toe for safety. most nurses and factory workers I know seem to love them for having to stay on their feet all day. they seem to last a long while too. I also know a good reebok boot I would try. but they would likely be too expensive for poorfags like these kids. so sketchers is the safer choice for me.
>>
>>215514958
idk if I would agree that sketchers last a long time, but they are decently comfortable. mine always melt in about 6-9 months but i walk all the time

in the book and in the movie Stebbins has two pairs of shoes. In the book he actually changes from his tennis shoes to his moccasins.

If it were me and I had 90 seconds I would bring the extra pair of shoes and swap them out so that they air out and dont get as hot. Try to reduce the blistering that way with decently walked in shoes.

but in the movie they only get 30 seconds of warning time before being ticketed unlike the 90 seconds in the book. obviously this is for film pacing but it also wildly changes strategy for things like swapping footwear midwalk.
>>
Just finished it. Why was the major so obsessed with "sac"?
>>
>>215514958
on the subject of shoes though. I would imagine that in a fully fleshed out universe: the 19 years of economic recovery that had been created by the long walk would ultimately disproportionately favor shoe manufacturers, since all the smart boys in the country would try to get some practice walking in, and would value good shoes. shoe companies would advertise their shoes as having carried past walkers to victory - and sell those shoes to regular consumers. the shoe industry would probably be restored to greatness quite quickly if people actually took walking seriously.

but they show up in unlaced and oversized leather boots and it almost looks like they dont really care or are just too poor to afford more than one pair of shoes.

If people are that poor - how can walkers from out of state even afford to get themselves to the starting line?

The film has huge flaws that break immersion, only a commitee comprised of braindead liberals could come up with something so bad given such an interesting premise.
Only thing good is the cinematography.
It's not as if they didn't have inspiration. Battle Royale is a much better film at one tenth of a budget. Setting is better, characters are better, violence is better.

An underdiscussed aspect of the movie is the explicit references to Existentialism. Ray mentions the books that his father showed him included the works of Nietzsche and Kierkegaard who are considered some of the first Existentialist philosophers. Existentialism is sometimes defined as the question of how we make meaningful and good choices when we are all facing death and how to best use our freedom even in cases where it is severely restricted.

>>

I was confused cause the movie doesn't explain the rules of physical contact at all. Like, one of the dudes gets warning for swinging at the other guy, not even hitting him, but at the same time people are allowed to carry each other. Is it just "negative" physical contact that gets a warning? You can also bring sharp objects along, so what stops the contestant in the final 4 from pulling out a knife and stabbing everyone, earning 3 warnings and winning?

This was the biggest piece of trash I've ever seen, bar none. It's so incredibly incompetent at dialogue, acting, pacing, editing, etc. It's worse than a student film. So I see no reason why people who are expecting to participate in a contest to the death can't get their act together. Why dont they have wet wipes on the walk? why dont they have spare shoes? do they just want to die are they making no effort at all? or does it take a whole towns worth of friends and family to give those 50-100 boys the resources they need to put together a knapsack and some extra meals for the road, shoes, and getting themselves to the starting line?!

The real solution is you let your jeans roll down as you move foreward. Then you keep going and bend backwards and do a fucking Pennywise and shit while you crab walk with your dick to the sky. Do this for a minute and resume.
