>The favorite film of Martin Scorsese, Stephen Spielberg, Akira Kurosawa, Michael Mann, and John Wayne himself. Routinely voted the greatest western ever made, and frequently listed among the top 10 greatest films ever made. Star Wars, Lawrence of Arabia, Dirty Harry, Taxi Driver, Unforgiven, Heat, and The Dark Knight, among others, were all heavily influenced by it.

All this and I bet half you suckers haven't even seen it before.

Some trivia. While filming this, Kirk Douglas visited the set and raped Natalie Wood when she was 16. For decades Wood said she was raped by an unnamed famous actor. After Douglas died her family published her biography and named Kirk Douglas as the raper.

After being raped by Kirk Dougles, Natalie Wood was later murdered by Robert Wagner, thrown off his yacht to drown.

I've never seen a John Ford film that wasn't kino.

Does he have a single bad film? They're all good, even the John Wayne goes to Ireland one is just pure fucking soul.
>>
Searchers is amazing. When you think Wayne is going to kill the girl because she's gone native and then he just embraces her in his arms is one of the most beautiful moments in a western
>>
>>215493951
>even the John Wayne goes to Ireland one is just pure fucking soul.
An old man I worked with when I was a teenager said that was his favorite film. Like many Americans, he was obsessed with his Irish ancestry and had fantasies of "going back".

The real life story it was based on, it took them 25 years to find her, and she had been passed around the tribe for decades and had a bunch of half Indian kids. They kidnapped her away from the tribe, she had severe Stockholm syndrome and begged to go back, and killed herself when they wouldn't let her. One of her rape babies, being substantially smarter than his fellow tribe members, went on to become chief of the Comanche and had a bit part in the 1908 silent film 'The Bank Robbery'.

Long story short, if her story had been more like real life then shooting her dead probably would have been the most compassionate thing to do.

In one scene, the young guy who follows John Wayne around is having a fist fight with the musician who almost marries his love interest. The girl they are fighting screams for somebody to stop them, and John Wayne says something "What are you screaming about, you're the one who started it". That quiets her down and she just watches the fight then. At one point it cuts to her and she has a big smile on her face, enjoying watching them fight over her. John Ford knew women, they love seeing bucks ramming over them.

On a side note that girl is a very beautiful Czech actress named Vera Mills. She's one of the few cast members who are still alive, she's 95 now.

Kirk Douglas was a mensch he wouldn't forcibly rape a 16 year old shiksa. She must have meant statutory rape. Back then when a 16 year old girl got flirty you fucked her.

I deeply, deeply hate what John Wayne did to film. I hate him and Kevin Costner more than any other actors on an artistic level for very similar reasons.

The fact she called him out specifically like that for so many decades despite the fact she probably fucked tens of other famous guys, makes me think it was substantially more than just a regretted it later situation. Was probably an actual hold your arms and bend you over the table type rape. Being a famous guy who a lot of women wanted, he was probably used to doing that and the women just not having a problem with it, because "Hey, I'm Kirk Douglas, she wants this Jewish dick even if she doesn't realize it."
>>
>>215495149
Hays Code and all I was pretty surprised by that scene. She kept trying to peek at his dick in the tub. In the scene they also talk about what if he stood up in front of her and she says she wouldn't mind. Then she goes behind him and pretends to close the door so he thinks she left the room and stands there behind him quietly for a bit like she's waiting for him to stand up not realizing she's still there. Pretty provocative for 1956.
>>
>>215493178
I watched it and it's just a completely standard 50s western. Nothing really standing out in any way. Completely mogged by the entiere Dollars trilogy. Not even trying to be contrarian, but like what's the big deal?

I've not heard of it until the last 24h, whereupon I found I had had to investigate further

>>
>>215493178
Too ponderous for me. Liberty Valance is stronger drama. My Darling Clementine + Young Mr Lincoln are the benchmark. Searchers is for the tech/vistavision fags to brag about their toys. Something too neat/clean about it.

It's literally just "generic cowboy v. Indian story #3573653728495" set in monument valley with vistavision. It is to Boomers what Marvel is to Millennials or shonen crap is to Zoomers.

The last one he did with Wayne which they shot in Hawaii, it wasn't a "bad" film per se, but it was just some random throwaway 60s comedy, the rating on IMDB is on spot for that one, it's like a 6/10 comedy that could have been also directed by Howard Hawks or anyone else really.

>raped Natalie Wood when she was 16
same year she was sleeping with directors for starring roles...don't necessarily believe it
>For Wood, 16, who’d been in 20 films since she was 5, getting the part of Judy would be her chance to transition to adult roles. The problem was that every actress from Debbie Reynolds to Jayne Mansfield was being considered.

But between the time Wood interviewed with director Nicholas Ray, 44, and did a screen test, they’d become lovers rendezvousing in a Chateau Marmont bungalow.

I don't like the corniness of movies from the 40's/50's/60's, but it's just a superficial dislike. The story they are telling in The Searchers is actually a lot more gritty and nuanced than anything from the Dollars trilogy. It's a shame such a big cultural shift happened to movies in the 70's, we all grew up on post shift movies and it prevents a lot of us from enjoying anything pre-shift.

When the little girl is hiding behind Ethan's parent's tombstones, you can see it says they were murdered by Comanche. His mother was likely gang raped, scalped and killed by them. That on top of them just raping killing the rest of his remaining family. It's how you create a one man eye-shooting genocide machine.

Was thinking this recently as well. Older westerns the guy's used to just be capable men, but Blondie is a literal superhero. Supernatural speed, supernatural accuracy, virtually unkillable. High Plains Drifter it at least fits because Clint's character is basically a wendigo out for revenge, so his supernatural abilities make sense in the context of the story.

Older Westerns are all the same exact stories, settings, and characters with different variations, they have zero creativity. They were the most formulaic genre in the history of fiction and were literally pumped out by the hundreds annually at their peak.
