Insane how fucking great these films are. The closest we've gotten to an LOTR quality cinematic event in the last two decades.
>>
People are going to come in here and say theyre crap but I think youre right OP
>>
>>215494007
The first film has some pacing issues but the sequel is near perfect. It's impossible not to get goosebumps during the final pre-battle speech
>>
There's not much emotion.
>>
>>215494007
Not really. LOTR was well cast. This had Zendaya thrown in by the studio who plays Chani like a Brooklyn teenager, a black female Liet Kynes, Jason Mamoa playing Jason Mamoa, Josh Brolin and Bautista over acting, twink Paul Atriedes, a decrepit Christopher Walken playing a role he doesn't have the gravitas for, and skinhead Harkonnens.

Villeneuve changes too much from the books and casts too poorly for these to be remembered. Still, Javier Bardem was standout.

The final act of part 2 was the most exhilarating thing I've seen in a movie in years. Watching that in IMAX was incredible. Goosebumps all over.

>Twink
He's a prince from a gay little aristocrat family and their gay little ocean planet that's the whole point he's not going to look like Alexander Skarsgard
Why dont you just admit that you are gay

I refuse to watch them. The changes from the books are too great and we'll never get Children or God Emperor so what's the point?

Professional Villeneuve hater reporting in

D1 was dogshit top to bottom. Villeneuve likes to suck his own cock with muh cinematic landscape and Zimmer booms like Nolan but unlike Nolan those shots never mean anything. The first sandworm encounter was terrible, while he showed the scale he managed to make nothing out of it. Where was the vision? He didn’t handle spice properly at all in either film. Where was the water merchant scene? Denis is obsessed with infinity niggers and needs to give us 5 minute close ups of slaves instead of kino.

Then Dune 2… oh god. Zendaya was a disaster. This faggot Denis had to put in quips and make Stilgar comic relief without Mamoa… dumbfuck capeshit poison must have infected his brain. Butler stole the show of course, and I actually didn’t mind Chalamet as based awakened Muadib but the first 2 acts sucked and were way too long.
>>
>>215494182
Good breeding in a family dedicated to training their sons in combat for literally thousands of years wouldn't lead to a bigger male?
>Skarsgard
You know he's from a good family, right? That's why he looks so good.
>>
>>215494226
Other criticisms I forgot
>Irulan/Pugh (I wanted to vomit when she was on screen)
>Shaddam
>No Thufir vs Jessica confrontation
>No Thufir at all pretty much
>Cut all of Piters kino dialogue
>Baron concept was ass
>>
What was the point of even portraying the shields in the films if they never work as intended and don't affect the choreography? They just become a plot hole, and in all honesty they don't look particularly cool, though I did like the reverberation on activation.
They may as well have just not had them at all and not even given a reason for CQC being the primary style of combat. I mean shit, there's plenty of other crap that happens for no reason in both movies, what's another flake of hay in the stack?
>>
>>215494265

Why don't the Fremen use guns, or like, bow and arrows, or something? That raid on the harvester was kek worthy.
>>
>Chani like a Brooklyn teenager
Agreed, she's the worst part imo
>a black female Liet Kynes
Also agree but she was barely in the movie
>Jason Mamoa playing Jason Mamoa
Don't have an issue with him as Duncan
>Josh Brolin and Bautista over acting
Not really. Brolin was fine and Bautista was playing a retarded man baby which is what the character is.
>twink Paul Atriedes
Like the book
>a decrepit Christopher Walken playing a role he doesn't have the gravitas for
Agreed but again, barely in the movie
>skinhead Harkonnens
My favourite change. Made them look alien and helped them stand out. Looked really cool, like a civilisation built around HR Giger.
>Villeneuve changes too much from the books
That's what adaptations tend to do. We got the bulk of the story though.
>too poorly for these to be remembered
These will be remembered. They stand out in the cinematic draught we're currently facing. Will only get more popular with part 3 next year.
>Still, Javier Bardem was standout.
He was good but Rebecca Ferguson and Austin Butler were the stand outs imo.
>>

Alongside ruining Chani, which ruins Dune Messiah, Villenueve's dynamic of the fundamentalist and secularist Freemen factions was ridiculous.

Personally, I enjoyed much of the final battle and concluding fight scene, which irritated me as it illustrated that these should've been great films, as they stand on works of genius, rather than forgettable Blockbuster slop.
>>
>>215494338
Teased in a two second fever dream as a teenager/young adult played by Anya-Taylor Joy, all but confirming that she'll just show up ready to lust over Idaho's potatoes and have zero build-up or explanation.
In other words: get ready for a 30 minute first act full of exposition dumps to explain what the fuck is going on, despite being a supposed direct sequel to an ongoing story.
>>
>>215494246
In the book, he's described as small and scrawny for his age. Chalamet is actually bigger than book Paul lol.
>>
>>215494397
She has a face like that girl you had a crush on in middle school because she was good in gym class
>>
>>215494397
NTA but I don't dislike her, she was just miscast, same with Walken. Ultimately though the real criticism is her character in general is just kind of shit, and in my opinion makes no sense in context. I legitimately have no clue why this "character" exists in the books, let alone the films.
>>
>>215494423
Agreed. While Villenueve happily pissed over Frank Herbert's work, Chalamet's casting or performance is not to blame.
>>
>>215494007
Hahahahha They are visually nice but these days that means nothing. These films are awful Dune adaptations containing race and gender swapped characters for DEI purposes. The Baron sucks, the Harkonnens look stupid. These films are propaganda. Lynch’s Dune bogs them entirely, weirding modules and all.

Was Paul fighting Frieza supposed to some tentpole sequence? It really just felt like two niggas who didn't even know each other fighting because they were bored and apathetic at that point.
Both duels in The King are far better and have real meaning behind them.
>>
>>215494453
> I legitimately have no clue why this "character" exists in the books, let alone the films.
She's a plot device mostly as Paul uses her to legitimise his claim as emperor. She's also there to test his morality in Messiah.
>>
>>215494415
That's stupid. Joy is a poor choice for Alia. Also if Denis plans on stopping at Messiah then the Alia plot is going to be butchered if he wants a satisfying end to her story for the viewer.

We don't get movies of this quality anymore. I think if these movies came out 20 or more years ago, they wouldn't have generated that much excitement. Today however, we are in a terrible place cinematically and these felt like a reminder that movies used to actually be capable of delivering great spectacle.

Yeah but, I mean... it's an empire? Everybody knows it was a hostile takeover, and he never breeds her anyway, so why doesn't he just marry Chani and tell everybody to fuck off?
That's kind of the point and his character at large by the end; He tells everybody to fuck off. He threatens the entire galaxy at gunpoint. Nobody cares about Shadman or his daughter or who is even emperor or the empire in general. As long as the spice flows, the illusion of a ruling party and the losers who play at it can continue on. There's not even one minor house in the outer rim thinking to itself "Wow this Jihad really sucks, BUT it is totally legitimate because I mean, come on, Paul married Irulan. This is fine. Everything's fine."
This tool exists to create tension for some Downton Abbey-tier melodrama where none would (or should) exist otherwise. It's all just a waste of time and I have no idea why Frank Herbert's editor didn't leave this shit on the cutting room floor. Probably because Frank Herbert was Frank Herbert's editor. That and cocaine, I imagine. Oh wait, that's Stephen King. What's the real-world equivalent of spice? LSD?

The first movie was the strangest theater experience I've ever had. It's so weird that no one ever believes me when I talk about it.

>First movie I saw in theaters after the pandemic
>Sunday evening
>Get there with about 20 minutes to spare, there's nothing but a few other single white males in the theater
>I get the perfect seat dead center
>About 5 minutes before the trailers start a family come in and sit behind me
>A Dad, two teenage girls, a mom, and a boy
>Get annoyed because wtf did they have to sit behind me when tehy had the entire theater
>Dad verbally basedjak's over shit like the Ghostbusters 2nd reboot trailer
>movie starts and its admittedly boring as shit
>I can hear the dad grumbling about how the book was so much better
>the girls are bored whispering
>at one point, I shit you not, BOTH girls prop their feet up on each side of my head
>my heart is racing and i just nervously stare ahead
>they keep their feet right beside of my head for like 30 minutes
>with like 45 minutes left in the movie the entire family starts talking about what they want to order from kfc so it'll be ready when they leave
>they leave the theater with the dad profusely apologizing for how boring it was
>one of the girls just stares at me

i still dont know what was going on with that. Its like they were trying to tease me on perfect.

anon, I...
the end of God Emperor teases the reintroduction of navigational computers, leaving spice as a pointless commodity beyond a hallucinogen. Leto II would have, or should have, seen this. Where's the collapse going to come from, unless life in general is comprised entirely of coked-out methheads?
>>
>>215495284
He anticipated that. The Golden Path was meant to spread humanity to every corner of the universe so the human race could never be destroyed by a singular calamity.
>>
>>215494007
It should have been a trilogy and the changes Villeneuve made to the story make Messiah a pointless movie

...were they not already spread around every corner? I mean, isn't that the point of intergalactic travel? If the entire point was to scatter the species, like trout in the river, why terraform Arrakis into paradise if the sole intent is to get everybody to fuck off from it? Did Leto forget that the greatest calamity to humanity (aside from Skynet) were literal sandniggers who, under no particular ordinance or supervision of space jesus, went out and bumfucked the galaxy for no other reason than they were violent sycophants?
God Emperor is just redundant, cyclical storytelling with a cast of forgettable non-characters. Frank Herbert was the George Lucas of science-fiction novels.
>>
>>215494007
Kind of in agreement with you honestly. The second film in particular is the best Blockbuster I had seen in two decades. It felt like an instant classic and a testament to what big budget filmmaking could be. I didn't even feel that way about Nolan's Batman desu.

Leto intentionally destroyed the spice by terraforming Arrakis. Scattering humanity to every corner of the universe and robbing them of the ability to space travel was the idea. Don't forget GE is 3500 years after Dune.

>>
>>215496543
He gives the Picard Golem and Siona his super secret stash of spice at the end. In fact, that whole sequence where he's dying, and then just exposition dumps his master plan is the laziest, most uninentionally hilarious thing I've ever read.
Ultimately though his intention was for spice to be used for intergalactic travel, but not for control, which makes no real sense because for a long period of time the main ruling force was just the economy of space travel via spice, which he just handed exclusive control over to Siona. The whole Jedi/Sith magic bullshit factions came later, and to some degree were always second fiddle to the overarching picture, despite their prominence in Arrakis and in the storylines.
Also that doesn't make sense; He was robbing them of space travel, but also wanted them to spread out through the galaxy? Huh?
The epilogue implies that, due to the reintroduction of computrons there won't be a spice monopoly, but there's no definitive answer as to if Leto II had any knowledge or impact on this. It's also not like he has prevented history from repeating itself. So in effect, 3,500 years have passed, and nothing has really changed. Making all character's actions within that timespan largely pointless.

And none of this would matter if Herbert could write a compelling character with as much depth as he writes compelling concepts. But he couldn't, so it just feels like you're reading the Bible, with 10x the jargon.
>>
>>215494007
every single action scene is so dogshit it will never touch lotr
>>
Funnily I think it suffers from the same problem as LoTR where there's zero sense of danger for any of the main cast as they waltz through set pieces. Maybe that's just inherent to the YA genre though.
LoTR has a ton of other good things going for it however, Dunc is bland and flat.
>>
>>215494007
Part 1 was watchable I guess, Part 2 was some of the worst shit and pisses on the source material
>>
>>215494007
Depth of dramatic conflict, the lore of characters interacting with peculiar worlds -- are all in LOTR's favor. It can get stuffy from all the classicism until Gollum. Dunc 1 has interesting parts that resembles a NATURE documentary or TOURISM ad, but the human element is web series-type of distraction.
